Hello everyone,
I hope you're all doing well. I'm seeking some advice and insights from this community regarding my guitar recording setup.
While I'm not primarily a guitarist, I often record guitar parts for my songs, which typically fall within the rock/metal/djent genres. Currently, my setup involves a direct chain from the guitar (I use an Ibanez GIO 7-string) to the audio interface without any intermediate devices or effects. Essentially, it's just guitar --> audio interface, and that's it. I then rely on audio plugins to shape the guitar sound, which means I don't use any effects from devices like the AXE FX.
I have also conducted tests using other guitars, such as an Epiphone Les Paul, to evaluate the sound quality, but the result was unsatisfactory.
In the past, I used a TASCAM US 1641 as my audio interface for recordings, but despite my efforts, the result was not satisfactory. Even after trying various guitars and intermediary devices like DI BOXes and valve preamplifiers, I couldn't achieve the desired crystalline sound. I then decided to upgrade to the Audient ID4 mk2, but even with this audio interface, I have not yet reached the level of sound quality I desire.
Recently, I came across the AXE IO ONE and AXE IO SOLO audio interfaces, and I'm wondering if they could offer a solution. Specifically, I'm interested in knowing if the direct signal, or "dry signal," produced by these interfaces compares favorably with that of the more expensive AXE FX units.
Additionally, I record vocals with a professional microphone. Therefore, I need to understand if one of these audio interfaces should replace my Audient ID4 mk2 or if it would complement it.
Furthermore, I'm curious to know if the difference in sound quality could be attributed to the internal preamplifiers of these devices. Does anyone have insights into the root cause of this difference in sound quality?
I've also noticed a significant difference in sound quality that can be observed in the final section of a video I found on YouTube, starting at the 0:46-minute mark, called "Quick test: AXE FXIII DI vs Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3gen DI" (can't post the link).
I would greatly appreciate any advice, recommendations, or shared experiences regarding this matter. If anyone has firsthand experience with AXE IO ONE or AXE IO SOLO, I'd love to hear your thoughts on their performance and suitability for achieving a high-quality guitar recording setup.
