IMPORTANT – Firmware 5.07 and Axe-Edit 1.273 FAQ and how to resolve issues after the update

A number of users have had questions and problems regarding the 5.07 firmware update and the Axe-edit 1.0.273 update. This post serves to explain issues that have been encountered, define best practices for updating, and provide solutions to common issues.

From 5.04b to 5.07 the following changes were made:

· Fixed incorrect range on TIME R in Delay block for Dual Delay mode.
· Exposed PAN L and PAN R parameters in Volume block to modification.
· Changed LFOs to reset to zero phase when stopped with RUN modifier.
· Added remote bypass and mute via MIDI SysEx use during Axe-Edit sync.
· Fixed system bank corruption upon sync with Axe-Edit.
· Fixed Gate block not muting in bypass if Bypass Mode set to Mute.
· Removed MUTE INPUT mode from Quad Chorus Bypass Modes.
· Replaced “4x12 METAL” with “4x12 30W ULTRA,” a cab from the original Axe-Fx.
· Changed remote patch dump protocol so that presets are synchronized with Global blocks.
· Fixed Global Patches so that corruption does not occur if parameters were added in a firmware upgrade.

A System dump is handled as a SysEx “bank” or “patches” containing user cabs, global blocks, and other parameters. As of FW 5.04, the Axe-Fx II actually stores presets upon recall to refresh global block data. This is why the HW now cycles through presets during a sync. Unfortunately a bug allowed this store behavior to apply to the system bank as well, potentially corrupting some system data. The most common side effects reported of course are loss of user cabs and global blocks.

Axe-Edit System backups of Axe-Fx II firmware 5.04 are likely corrupt and should not be used after upgrading to 5.07

The following is the suggested method for updating your firmware from 5.4b to 5.07 using Axe-Edit builds 1.0.273 or later.

· Backup user presets in Axe-Edit via Settings : Sync and Back Up. Deselect “Create system backup”
· Back up Cabs (instructions below)
· Go through and note system parameters that are not set to default – i.e, input settings, MIDI settings and other global settings to be recreated after System Parameters are reset.
· Upgrade Firmware to 5.07
· Reset system params from utility menu on HW
· Upload latest V5 preset banks (A, B, C) to HW via editor – found at Fractal Audio Systems Support
· Put non default System parameters back to custom settings
· Restore (upload to hardware) desired user presets from backups via editor
· Re-upload cabs (instructions below) and re-create global blocks

Due to correcting a dual delay bug, any user presets containing dual delays will have the right delay set at much higher settings. This is due to the right delay being changed from an incorrect max of 1000ms to correct max of 8000ms. You will need to reset the right delay to correct values.

Additionally, any dual delay block that was saved to the blocks library will have this issue. It should be deleted and the corrected block resaved.

Any presets that were using the 4x12 Metal cab may not sound as intended.

There are reports of the backup and sync failing at various points in .273 build. This has been confirmed and is being looked into.

There have been some instances of the Axe-fx II freezing up after the 5.07 update. This has been almost exclusively due to preset corruption that occurred in 5.04b. You mostly likely would not have known about the corruption. These presets unfortunately must be deleted then recreated from scratch.

If you experience a lockup, note the preset that locked up. Turn off the Axe-fx II. Start up while holding the recall button down. Overwrite the offending preset with a good preset. Recreate the old preset.

If your Axe-fx seems to freeze when starting up, hold down the recall button while starting to load a blank preset. The Axe-fx is probably trying to start on a corrupt preset, this will allow you to find and overwrite that preset.

If you are still having issues, please email support@fractalaudio.com explaining the problems.

If you can, send a copy of your bank A, B, C, plus your system backup. If you do not know how to do this, they can send you detailed instructions.

Most users will not have issues other than having to reset the right delay on dual delays. However, hopefully this will help users that do encounter issues.

RESTORE

* An additional issue was found with one person regarding a couple of his presets using the phaser. When they were set to vibe, the preset locked up. It only happened on his presets, not my presets, stock, or freshly created ones. I was able to reproduce this on his. Fractal Audio is examining the preset.
