I'm so amazed by my new Matrix GT1600FX :-)

I just got my brand new power amp from Matrix. I'm blown away by it's balls. I used to love my GT1000FX but this new amp has some additional fattness/juice which I love. I use it with my Cornford 4x12 and 2x12 cabs. I love it! Thanks Andy for designing a great piece of gear an thanks Cliff again for your great Axe Fx machine :)

Nothing - but added power always adds weight to the sound, regardless. Its the same with HiFi amps. More power availability = more weight/depth of tone even if you run it light.

Exactly ! Thats matter of some more weight you feel when you stroke your strings..I love that feeling :)

I just bought one of these and haven't got it yet. Sorry Matt! I ordered it from Sound connections in California, they had a demo one marked down. It will be replacing my Mesa 2:100 and I hope I like it. I'm a little worried about not using tubes but this amp is getting some good reviews so I'm excited to give it a go! Sound connections was the eBay name I ordered it from with 2 year warranty but they said they were a dealer for Matrix, it might be from Tone merchants but I'm not sure. I mentioned it to Matt from Matrix and he didn't say they weren't a dealer so hopefully I'm good. EBay can be scary!

tone wise I don't think there's a difference between the 1600 and 1000

the 1600 will certainly provide more headroom, but then the 1000 has more than enough headroom too

I think the main difference is that the 1600 goes up to 11

I've never played through a 1600, but I have a 1000
and the 1000 is plenty plenty loud..
and when the 1000 is destroying me and everyone else in the room, the lil' lights indicate that it's just ticking over..

so...

I can only conclude that as the 1600 is a little over 50% more powerful..
that it'll do a little over 50% more destroying

this can only be a good thing

in truth.. I'm generally of the "bigger is better" school of thought...
the only reason I opted for the 1000 was to save weight in my rack....

and of course the 1000 lacks no "spudz"

but you know.....
when I start thinking about 1600...
it kinda makes me not be able to stop thinking about it...
even though I have no shortage of horse power....
and it looks the same.. and sounds the same..
there's always this Mr Scotty in my head "we need more power Capn"
especially when I've already proved that I do not in fact need more power..

I guess I just like being a thug with a big rig.. lmao...

Not seen that before - but its a very good explanation. should be a sticky in the Amps/Cabs section for those asking how many SS watts they need, and also as an explanation (or part of) why valve watts (that soft clip, and sound musical) seem louder than SS watts (which dont).

Its also why I consider my Gt1000, at 240w or so into my 60w 8 Ohm cab isnt overkill. That is actually a peak of 480w as the 240 is RMS, so 3db below peak. So - that allows me a crest valve of around 8 or 9db.

The question is, would 500w (or 1000w peak)be better still ? that would allow a crest value of nearer 20db :)

Yeah, Clarky. When I was wearing my plugs, which attenuate life by 17dBs, I was thinking "That Clarky, he needs to be louder." My ears were ok, but my solar plexus was getting some abuse. :D

Mapps, I believe that it works out at about 4 to 5 SS watts to 1 valve watt.

this is totally the direction I'm heading in...

and in addition...
it's nice to have the cool lava lake glowing from within the GT1000..
it gives me the comforting feeling that when I'm playing
I'm causing a reactor meltdown or something...
