I'll probably get flamed for this but...

I just got my Axe this past week and when I tried it out of the box, I was blown away. It was super easy to just pull up presets and get a fantastic tone. Then I updated to the 18 beta, and I'm finding myself agreeing with you, for almost the opposite reason. It almost feels too raw, too gainy/gritty compared to 17 where things felt smooth and refined. But in my case I'm almost positive it's because I don't know what I'm doing yet...setting levels and so forth. I'm almost exclusively just using the factory presets until I get into it further.

My next step (this has nothing to do with firmware) is to figure out how to get the MFC set up for a live performance. I've watched the videos and they're all about presets and scenes and song mode and I have very little idea the difference between those in practical terms. I mean, I understand what a preset is, and I understand what a scene is. I'm not sure how to use the MFC, logistically speaking, to change from one preset to another, and literally zero idea what song mode is. But I'm getting there. I finally have the MFC mapped out the way I want, with the exception of being unable to assign the tap function to the current "down" button...that's a big kick in the noodles. Otherwise I'm really digging the axe. It sounds great and the BASIC functions are pretty intuitive. The more advanced stuff...well, I'm learning.

Try the smooth parameter. Settings for Authentic, smooth, ideal etc

So- I guess there's a first time for everything. I loaded 18.01 and everything sounds awesome :encouragement:. I know others have said that they had to load 18b7 twice before it sounded right (which I didn't do), so apparently I fell victim to that somehow - makes sense given what I was hearing. Yeah I have to tweak here and there now to get levels and some nuances back to what I want to hear, but this is in line with every other firmware rev - meaning better than the last.

Apparently my hearing is still intact so I'll try to save the money I would spend going to all those specialists.

Cheers and thanks to everyone who tried to help :)

I really found a fondness for 17.04 also. 18 didn't set with me straight away, and I had to reinstall it. After that it sounded better.

It worries me when I read here and in other topics that some people have to reinstall the FW before it works correct. I read this more recently. Why is this? How do you know when it's the FW itself that doesn't sound as it should or a bad install? Very hard to judge if you have a 100% correct install if you don't know what to expect from the new FW.

i didn't believe this at first, but the report kept coming time and time again.

i was helping someone in my chat and we experienced this first hand. after first load, all tones were thin, lack of gain, very bad sounding. he loaded the FW a 2nd time and it was suddenly there like it should be.

the "bad" load should be blatantly obvious. if you are thinking "hmm, it sounds a bit different" then you probably are NOT experiencing this. if you are thinking "wow there's no gain, every amp and preset is just high end and thin," then MAYBE you are experiencing it :)

i don't think anyone has recorded the bad sound so it's hard to put a finger on. even cliff mentioned recently that it might be a "thing." i'll try to find that source.

Yeah, this seems to be an issue and shouldn't happen. The checksum should be verifying the package and preventing this from happening.

There have been cases where people have had to load the FW 3 or 4 times. Something not right.
