It's just a chore, no way around it.

And indeed, possible gain staging and compression is so wide that there is no way of making a default level that will fit every model.

I use waves dorrough meter plugin, which will show you the perceived loudness.

Yes- that's pretty much my experience of it.

I like the vol up/down idea on the MFC to make changes on the fly (with your feet!) if needed.
