How to achieve this kind of effect on FRFR?

Hi guys,

Can anyone help me please? I am sitting at work and I wonder how to achieve this kind of synth/distorted sound like in the intro of Tool "The Lost Keys"

btw. im playing thru FRFR/FoH

Any ideas?

Sounds like what you get when you use an e-bow!

yeah, sounds like that to me too. i think it's set to the octave up harmonic. you can hear it morph between the fundamental and the harmonic at the beginning

It sounds like an e-bow, but I remember Adam Jones stating he never used one in any recording, who knows.

I've seen them perform the tune live a number of times. It is, in fact, bass guitar feedback (a distortion pedal is most likely engaged, and maybe some other stuff). Not sure if the octave is due to the feedback or an engaged pitch shifter.
