This question is inspired by the new FullRes IRs. The intent of that feature was playing at home, and obviously a large amount of room would sound bad live.
Of course, the answer to the thread question is “not much,” but if it is more than zero, is a small amount of room a missing ingredient to a better or more authentic live tone?
Back in my days of using real amps on stage or being sound man for people with real amps, I remember not liking the mic right up on the grill. It sounded stuffy. I liked giving it a few inches of space and it sounded more natural. I wonder how much of that was the proximity effect of the mic vs capturing a little more room sound.
