Home made FRFR for AXE FX III

So I decided to build an FRFR solution that is portable and has accurate sound reproduction and came up with this solution...

I have a pair of Behringer Truth 2031 monitors in my studio that sound great with the AXE and wanted to be able to recreate that same uncolored sound in a portable cabinet. After trying several powered PA speakers including a pair of ALTO TS 312s, I was unimpressed with the peaky response that could not be tuned out so I decided to build a DIY FRFR setup.

What I ended up doing is buying another pair of 2031A monitors and building a stereo cabinet to house the speakers and electronics from the monitors. I got the monitors for a very low price used and built the cabinet for around 90 bucks. I copied the internal dimensions of the monitors including internal baffles, etc. in the cabinet plans.

The end result is 540 watts of flat stereo sound and a close match to my studio setup without needing to radically alter my presets. I am very happy with how it turned out and am posting in case anyone is thinking about doing the same thing. Last thing I am doing is adding some fender tilt-back legs which I have for when time allows. If anyone is interested, I can share the cabinet plans I created in Visio.

- Mike

Thanks for sharing. Cool idea - it looks great. Other than weight savings, is there an advantage to removing the monitor parts and remounting them in a custom enclosure? Rather than, say, building a "carrying case" and bolting complete monitors into it.

Cheers.

Yeah, weight and portability are the main issues. The monitors were enclosed in 3/4" MDF and were very heavy (36 lbs. each) and adding an enclosure would have added to that - (probably over 100 lbs.). I used 1/2" plywood to keep the weight down - total weight is less than 50 lbs. now.

That is a great idea. I had a pair of those monitors, and they were HEAVY. Rehousing them together into a single plywood enclosure is crafty thinking!
