Hidden Values: How do you change by typing the number in?

I'm sure this is user error but how do you change the value by typing the number in for the controls that are hidden? I hover over the control but every time I try to click in the box it disappears. I can adjust with the mouse wheel but can't figure out how to type the value in manually. What am I doing wrong?

Click the knob label and hit enter....

Clicking the label instead of the control is also a good way to keep from accidentally changing the value when you're only trying to select the control.
