Double blind test.
Apparently they all could hear a difference, they just didn't agree on what was better, or which instrument was the one with the reputation for being great.

I have some relatives that play old world stringed instruments and theirs are all "old". Because older is better. To them. When one of theirs needed very expensive repair and I suggested just buying a "new" one, they scoffed at the notion that anything built in this or the last century would be good enough, tonally.
