Have an Ernie ball vpjr, an insert cable and an axe fx ultra.. Not working

So I got an insert cable, hooked it up (tried both ways) and it works but it will only go from 0-100 nothing in between. I know an expression pedal would be better but I've heard people say they use an Ernie ball vp and it works for them.
Anyone know how to actually have a slope of motion not just 0...then immediately 100.

you need to calibrate the pedal on the ultra. you may also have the pedal type set to something other than "continuous"
