Guide: Re-Amping with external sound card/audio interface

Anyone here using RCA to XLR cables to use between the Axe Fx AES connectors and the RCA connectors on your audio device? I read somewhere that someone else was having the same issues as me and changing to RCA to XLR using AES instead of SPDIF solved the issue with the input clock on the Axe Fx?

I've made RCA to XLR cables yesterday and it still isn't working, I keep getting the No input clock message. Will contact support

Hi guys
icon_smile.gif

I need help on reamping with the Apollo Twin Duo, an Axe FXII, my Macbook Pro, and LPX.

I'm using the Twin as the main Interface.

Here's what I do know
icon_smile.gif

1) How to set up the separate guitar track on LPX to record the original Axe f/x laden track (on input 1 and 2).
2) How to set up the separate guitar track on LPX to record the clean Axe signal (on input 3).
3) How to set up the separate guitar track on LPX to re-record the alternate sound Axe f/x track (on input 4) from the clean Axe signal.
4) How to go into the Axe's settings and change it to analog/usb/SPDIF/etc.
5) How to go into LPX's Audio Preferences and change it to the Apollo Twin/Axe FX/etc.

Here's what I don't know how to do
icon_smile.gif

How to hook it all up, what cable to use (not a usb, as I can't make it work with a usb cable), and how to make it work, step by step.

Thanks in advance!

Jerry

When I used this method everything worked except being able to play back the dry track after recording it and send it back to the Axe. That is when the dry track's output in Logic is set to anything else but "Stereo Out".

I will ask some very obvious questions because it feels like I'm missing something very, very obvious, or maybe it isn't obvious at all...?

What cables do I need and how should they be connected?
What are the settings supposed to be in the Axe?
How do I configure ins/outs in Logic? (+ mono/stereo etc)
How do I configure ins/outs etc in Mix Control? (+ mono/stereo etc)
Is there a way to tell if the Saffire is/isn't the Master Clock?

What I used:

Axe Fx II XL - with the settings from "shasha"
Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56
iMac with Logic 9
Yamaha monitors connected to the Saffire

How I connected it:

Two patch cables -> Axe Fx Unbalanced Output 1 -> Saffire Analog Inputs 5 + 6, panned hard L + R
USB cable -> Axe Fx -> iMac
MIDI cable -> Axe Fx MIDI Out -> Saffire MIDI In (I have no idea why this is necessary, I always have it plugged in)
Two 75 Ohm SPDIF cables -> Axe Fx SPDIF In -> Saffire SPDIF Out and vice versa
Monitors -> White main monitor outputs
Guitar -> Axe Front Input

Settings I guess could be relevant in the Saffire Mix Control:

Sample Rate: 48 kHz
Sync Source: Internal
Sync Status: Locked
Input 9 -> "Inputs" -> "SPDIF 1.1, panned hard left <- here I can hear the dry signal when playing
Input 10 -> "Inputs" -> "SPDIF 1.2, panned hard right <- ----------------------------II---------------------------
Access to SDPIF 2.1 and 2.2 is denied.
Input 17 (named "DAW 1 & 2") -> DAW -> DAW 1
Input 18 -> DAW - DAW 2
Mix 1 (L) -> Monitor Output 1
Mix 2 (R) -> Monitor Output 2

Settings in Logic:

Sample Rate: 48 kHz
24-bit recording: enabled
Audio channel 1 - DRY - mono - Input 9 - Output 9/Output 9-10
Audio channel 2 - WET - stereo - Input 5-6 - Stereo Out
Audio channel 2 - RE-AMP - stereo - Input 5-6 - Stereo Out

The Apollo Twin Duo does not have a SPDIF In or Out, it only has one Optical In Port.

I do have a SPDIF to Optical Converter, but it is only one port in (SPDIF), and one port out (Optical).

That being the case.................................

Doesn’t matter how many exclamation points, you cannot use the Shasha method with the twin to reamp. If you have AxeFx, use the USB audio reamp technique.

You may want to get a new audio interface. I got an RME UCX to do this, and a two way optical to SPDIF box. I got it from B&H - "Optical Data Link ODL' - a little, inexpensive box. The RME UCX is costly compared to the others, but it allows me to record and reamp without using AFX as interface. I did try the AFX as interface for a while, and I decided the benefits of an interface with two digital I/O ports like the UCX was worth the cost.

Agreed, but if you’re already invested in the Apollo UAD ecosystem (I know I am), and you can afford to upgrade, any of the non Twin Apollo’s have dual coAx SPDIF.......piece of cake to reamp with.

Hi bradlake :)

Please note that the reason solving my problem is taking so long is because the AXE F/X is at another location.

When I go to that location and try to make any suggestions work, something always comes up in the steps that's different than what I have been told.

So I post the question, but as everyone has lives they have to live, I won't get a response until hours after I've gone back home :)

Not an excuse, that's just reality :)

The example does not show using an interface of any type.

Is no interface shown because it is irrelevant for reamping?

My existing chain is guitar into AXE, AXE L&R Audio Out into Twin L&R Audio In, Twin Monitor Outs to (2) Powered Monitors.

So all I have to do is connect a usb cable between the MBP and the AXE, create (2) new tracks on LPX, set the input/output of each track correctly on LPX, set the AXE Menu correctly, record the guitar, and then I'll have the processed guitar on the first track, and the clean guitar on the next track?

It's that simple? :)

Thanks,
Jerry

Yup

Yup. Just make sure you have AxFx chosen as the audio in/out in Logic prefs. And that the sample rate is 48K. It may be best when trying this out to physically remove the Twin from the setup and hook your monitors to the AXE , and when you confirmed you can make it work, try to incorporate the the Twin and the AXFX as an Aggregate Instrument.....

When you say "try to incorporate the the Twin and the AXFX as an Aggregate Instrument", does that mean it might not be able to be done even if I have set them up as an Aggregate Instrument?

Or.....

As long as I have set up the Twin and AXFX as an Aggregate Instrument, and I set up the AXFX and LPX as I described, it will all work?

As bradlake is not 100% sure if I can use the Apollo Twin Duo and AXEFX TOGETHER for reamping, is there no one on this site who owns both of them, does reamp, and can tell me how to do so?

Please someone, throw me a bone here :)

I have not, but i am wondering if being able to use two or more interfaces depends on the DAW and the setting for the DAW..?

I did these videos quite a while ago RE: Re-Amping with the Axe-Fx.

Hope they help!

I tried this method aswell now. Does NOT work for me. I must be an idiot. All I get when I switch from "Front" to "Rear" is screaming feedback if any distortion block in engaged in the Axe. I get MAJOR jitter issues aswell. What am I doing wrong here?

I've hooked up the cables, set up the Saffire, made an aggregate device, set up everything in Logic 9 and recorded something (watched your videos meticulously). Everything works THIS far. But when I switch the output on the dry track I've recorded in Logic to "ReAmp" (output 3) and I switch "Front" to "Rear" on the Axe I for starters don't hear the dry track and as I wrote earlier, I get feedback (if distortion blocks are on).

This question may be a bit off topic and I know I’ve asked about it before but I can’t seem to find the thread. Is there a way to have your DAW trigger modifier changes? What I am getting at is I’d like to automate fx on/off while re-amping. Anyone know if that’s possible and if so how?

I’m running the recently deceased Sonar and a Focusrite 18i8.

Effect on/off can be assigned to MIDI controllers. So if your DAW can send MIDI, you're golden.
