FX-8 with a Pedal Preamp (with IR/CabSim)

Hi guys, pardon if similar queries have been asked before,

Is it possible to use FX-8 with a pedal preamp (with built in IR/cab sim on), with the signal flow: a pedal preamp (IR on) into >> FX-8 >> into FOH/audio interface? The reason for this, so that stereo fx can be utilized. If so, any recommended setting within the fx-8, routing, any workaround needed, etc?

Thanks so much, guys.

ps: not having the FX-8 yet, but thinking to get a used one if it can do as per above.

I might recommend doing your preamp pedal in the loop of the fx-8 so you can utilize effects pre and post preamp. Guitar would plug into the fx-8 and output would come from there also. Stereo fx could be utilized in post loop but it is my belief that anything before the preamp would be summed to mono.

thanks for your response, how is the in/out from the preamp pedal into fx-8? I read the manual, but could not find direct answer to this. I understand that FX-8 intended use is 4cm/7cm kind, but asking this question thinking if it also can do like what i am thinking.

I got a Friedman IR-X, so no stereo fx loops unfortunately.

Right now, I'm using it (with IR on) with FM3 (for fx only post/power preamp), it works well. But, since to my understanding FX-8 got the better true bypass and no tone coloration/sucking, I'm thinking to try it although with prev gen fractal effects which I'm okay with.

Maybe consider the VP4?

I believe this is right.

Wondering if anyone can comment on how this works running a preamp pedal into the fx loop of the FX8, so that the FX8 can be used in mono for pre- fx and then out of the FX8 in stereo for post- fx.

exactly, I'd be happy to use some drives/wah/etc in pre (mono), and post fx (stereo), but not really sure how would be the signal path, from the ir-x into fx-8.

I was trying to work that out with the Ethos Clean Fusion Deluxe.

I currently have 2 VP4s and a MIDI controller. We will see if I can set up what I really want to accomplish: Running one pre- and the other post, using the balanced cab sim out. There are a few things I have to get set up (before setting up a MIDI controller). One of those is that I will be running mono TRS out into the post VP4.

Unfortunately, I have been outside of that era of fractal products for some time and don’t remember enough to help you along. It should be possible with some brain power, I just don’t have a unit in front of me to work it out.

Hi!
I have a Fractal FX8 Mark II, I use it to connect to a tube amp using the 4 cable method, two of which are humbuster cables. It's a great connection, absolutely silent and with great fuctional. The VP4 is frankly a weaker device, with no relay to switch channels, just four buttons. Here is a link to Leon Todd's video on this subject.

Only instead of the VP4, you'd be connecting the FX8 using the 4-cable method, with MIDI allowing you to switch channels and settings.

My thoughts exactly….

I dont mean to hijack this thread, but since it was brought up - this was my first thought after I watched Leon’s video to announce the VP release. I voiced my opinion on Leon’s video and I’m pretty sure he either deleted my comment, or I was unable to find my comment again after the fact….

I just bought an IR-X and plan on using it with my FX8. It should work in 4cm just like any other amp with an effects loop. Once I get this all setup, I'll try to post a video on setting this up.

The FX8 is a great unit, too bad Cliff didn't continue to support it. With that said, it still kills!

Jammed with some friends the other day using the IR-X in 4cm with the FX8 and it sounds great! Makes for a versatile light/small grab n go rig. Even with some cheap PA speakers, it sounded great, no harshness to eq out.

guitar > In1 of FX8 > out1(L/Mono) of FX8 > input of IR-X > Main Out of IR-X > In2 (Left)FX8 > Out 2 FX8 > PA mixer.

I like the post effects after the cab sims of the IR-X much like I would in the Axefx.
