FM9 usb into iPhone. Clicks and pops?

50% CPU on the preset. Are you saying that these types of USB cables are better?

I really don't know how to answer the cable question. I just mentioned it since it was a possible variable in between our setups.

My USB cable is ancient. Back then, it was common to see ferrite chokes on USB cables. I'm guessing they're not so common today because the cables have better shielding. And as far as I know, the ferrite choke doesn't actually contact the signal path, in many cases they are removeable - just snapped on the cable near one or both ends.

In my case, I was using this ancient USB cables with ferrite chokes, and THIS usb-c adaptor. Looking at the link, I see that it claims to be USB-C / USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt compatible (although I'm not sure that any of that matters to this situation). It's just another variable to consider.

To state the obvious, I'm pretty certain the issue is not with the FM9.

I can record into the Voice Memos app without any audio issues. Have you tried that?

I will give it a try. Was really hoping to record video and audio together to cut down on editing time.

Did you update the USB firmware to its latest version? Something similar happened to me with a very powerful laptop a year ago. I returned it to the store, and the problem continued. I updated all Windows drivers, including those for the FM9 and one day I remembered that there was a driver for USB (1.02). I updated and problem solved

That's a good point. I hadn't considered the USB drivers before, because (in my head) I wasn't thinking about recording into a DAW. But USB is USB. If it helps the OP, when I did my test, I had recently updated the USB driver (roughly same time as I installed FW8.01. So with any luck, it's just an older driver.

Just to be clear, I’m not talking bout the Windows driver. There’s a USB firmware for the FM9 and affect the unit itself, not the computer.

I understood what you meant. I was just explaining that it didn't even occur to me when I first responded to OP. In my head, "driver" implied windows DAW recording, and he was trying to record to iOS.

it's because iPhone video records audio at 44.1Khz and not 48Khz.

I had the same issue with my new Antelope Quadro interface - I was spdif from my FM3 into the Quadro (so the clock on the Quadro was set to SPDIF 48Khz) and the using the the secondary USB output on the Quadro into my iPhone 16 and I would get occasional clicks and pops. When I disconnected the fractal (which would set the Quadro clock to internal 48Khz) I then selected 44.1Khz and it would change the clock to USB 44.1Khz (iPhone is still connected so the interface is using that as the clock source)

Once I worked that out I just took analog outputs from the FM3 into the Quadro and set the clock to 44.1Khz and no clicks are pops.
Unfortunate there is no work around with just the Fm9

Apple suggests it can accept 48Khz but that doesn't seem to be the case. It may be the native video only accepts 44.1Khz so there might be other video apps that do accept higher sample rates

This is very strange because @GMGM (above) recorded no problem

before I realised what the issue was - I could sometimes record without hearing obvious pops -

I watched the first video of GMGM and around the 29-30 second mark there is an audible click which is the same sound I was getting.

Yep, it's there. Thanks for pointing that out.

I tried with Black Magic Cam from the Davinci Resolve folks and you can set the following audio options:

Of course, the FM9 appears as the audio source when connected via USB. Even when setting the sample rate as 48.0 kHz, it still clicked and popped the same way as using the native camera.

I've downloaded that app so I shall check later on to see what it is actually doing - it might state it is recording at 48kHz but there might be something where you can't override the system wide sample rate - similar to how you can't have a system wide eq curve (which is really frustrating)

I have been using the app 'Dolby On,' and haven't noticed any of the audio issues; as I mentioned in a previous post, I don't notice any issues with the Voice Memos app. This seems to suggest that the issue might have something to do with the native iOS Camera app; or maybe some kind of interaction between the cable and Camera app? I'll check out Black Magic Camera.

That's strange - I've done a bunch of recording to iPad or iPhone with the camera USB adapter and had no issues like this.
Not sure if this would change anything, but I have a 3 foot USB (printer end from Fractal) to USB-C cable going directly into my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I assumed the direct connection would be ideal.

I would think so - I have a camera adapter cable for my USB-C iPad as well though so I haven't tried just a cable between Fractal and iPad...
