Flattening the headrush curve

Hey guys,

I received my HR 108 on Saturday. I am really liking this cab but I wanted to see if someone can help me out with this. I'm a little dumb when it comes to this stuff. I really want to try @WKSmith eq settings since I feel I'm missing that sparkle too. Unfortunately, this is what I have on the Global setup - out 2 eq

I have no clue how to input these settings :(

Use the config tab above the out2 eq . On the config tab of the setup menu.. choose eq type as parametric .

After re-working some presets with now more accurate monitoring, my FOH sounds much better too.
I’ve missed this. Gonna try it out. As I play mostly with IEMs I use the same output (2) for FOH as well as for HR108 when there’s no FOH / monitoring signal. Maybe my headphone at home will sound better too with this eq setting :)
Pity it’s not possible to save / recall different output eq settings but you can’t have it all.

This was implemented to help tame the headrush 108 specifically... but I am curious how it works with your setup 🙂👍

I run my FOH send(s) flat without any global EQ and have the FOH send an aux for my IEMs.

I did a show for Halloween using 2 of the 108s in stereo and had a sketchy iem mix so kept one ear out. The 108s dialed up to about 75% volume sounded phenomenal ! Amp in the room, in the road, down the road, ...yeah what drummer?... kinda pants flapping loud.
It echoed off of downtown buildings for 4 blocks in each direction.

Folks raved about the tone. Pros That do this for a living every week.. Several of them. And that was with the FM3.

But maybe skip this eq setting for FOH. And probably iems . It's great to fix the headrush 8's tho

Cliffs recommendation of some extra 125Hz really helps with amp in the room btw (in the amp block) 😉

Hi,

I'm not new, but have purchased the FX3 turbo and use it with ADAMS studio monitors and 2 HEADRUSH 108 FRFR speakers.
The headrush gives to me a more guitar sound and feel. But it's quite bass heavy and it colors the tome much more then my adams.

Anyone here that has a BLOCK that flattens the curve?
As a good startingpoint I mean....

I wish I could share the block. That is not yet possible. If you use the global eq as parametric with these settings posted above.. it does help tame the worst deviations and will make the 108 behave much more like studio monitors.

Hey there

Got 2 of the 108 setup with the AxeFXIII. I have no trouble with the sound, but gonna try your option for sure. Maby I dont know what flat sound is. Thnx for that

Cheers

The headrush 108 is a popular and cheap way to monitor fractal rigs. But it is far from "flat" . Flat is relative to a lot of things. But this thread aims to tame the worst deviations and make the critter behave a little better.

I picked up a miniDsp UMIC-1 and REQ software on the Mac using the FM3 as the interface . And with the headrush on the floor, contour switch off, and surrounded in foam to minimize the room..

Analyzing the RTA plots hundreds of times revealed some big dips in response that can be corrected somewhat with global eq.

The first plot in Red shows the 108 without eq. The plot in blue shows the corrected response with parametric global eq.... which is limited from the lowest and highest bands being shelving instead of peaking. But it still made a drastic difference removing the blanket and boominess.

And the second pic are the settings on the global eq .

Hope this helps someone. Your mileage, temperature, and humidity may vary
If you don’t mind me asking, what was your process for mic placement? Did you take samples in various positions then average them?

Yes I used some different positions for the initial measurements and averaged them. I isolated the cabinet from the floor and the room reflection with a thick foam surrounding the cab and underneath.

I was getting consistent deviations in the same bands even with different mic placement. I settled on a fixed position off axis of both drivers about 2' out from the speaker where both drivers converge.

Here is a great tutorial I started with

I tried these changes today and it made quite an improvement to my ears. Is there anyway I could get the individual Q values? I’m making the changes on the unit itself so I can’t see the knob values as shown in the picture. I just adjusted until the graph looked similar to the one shown, but it’s not spot on. Thanks for posting this info!

I will post the Q when I get the Mac plugged back up. Putting Christmas stuff in the attic has the studio torn apart lol

I use two HR 108s, one for drummer as a guitar monitor, one for me. For larger shows, I just have direct out to FOH, but for clubs, I bring my Friedman ASC12 along to crank up the output. Using all three FRFRs sounds massive. I do a low cut at around 68hz and a high cut around 11khz in the global eq.

A few months ago we had to share actual cabs with the other bands. I turned off all cab sims, obviously, and was surprised how much better the FRFR setup sounded in terms of being clear and sitting in the overall mix with the band. I'm never going back to physical cabs. The 108s are great for live monitoring. I don't need a flat EQ for that.

Hey there

The 108 sounds more present indeed with your settings, but now the headphone sounds too more gain... I took out the 24V mod for the EMG but still on headphones the usual sound is off. Yes, your setting does work for the 108 only have to figgure out how to split the headphone settings from the 108, they both are on out 1 now with TRS. Out 3 has TRS so maby will place the 108's on out3 and add out 3 to my presets.

I would doubt the Headrush could ever do justice to the Axe 3 whatever you do to it. It seems like a waste to me to make your axe in to a programable PV bandit with the ability to dial through the entire Marshall MG and Fender frontline range.

Hey there

This "mod" does right to the 108 IMHO so this thread is helping those who use it.

As a headrush user I would like to ask what your opinion is for a good FRFR for the AxeFXIII ?
I am not a specialist of any kind and try to find the best "affordable" options to get a good sound.

Cheers

I have tried pretty much everything and settled for two passive Xitone wedges with F12x200s and a Matrix 2U GT1000. This is the most real sounding FRFR at volume I have found. Anything quiet you should use studio monitors, good ones. The absolute best rock tone I've had was through a VHT power amp in the a vintage Marshall 4x12 with the power amp and cab sims off but this only works with the models that suit this power amp.
