FCB1010 ETHERCON MOD

This a mod I did to my FCB1010 to use 1 cat-5 cable with neutrik ethercon connector to pass MIDI IN , MIDI OUT and Power.

The phantom power is based on voes'mod :http://www.voes.be/fcb1010/pdf/fcb1010 phantom power adaptor.pdf

I just used a breadboard and superglued it on the case.

It worked out well.

In the beginning when I sent a sysex patch dump from ripwerx to the FCB sometimes it arrived corrupted messing up the FCB in which case I needed to resend the Sysex.

That was because I used an of the self unshielded utp cable.

When I used a shielded cable like this:

http://www.thomann.de/gr/cordial_cat_5_cse5nn5.htm

The problem seems to have gone away.

I am not sure what the max length limit of the cable is but with 5m of the cable above everything seems to be OK

As far as controlling the AXE though it has been flawless up until now.

The other problem is that to open a D-series hole for the ethercon connector you need something like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-Zubehör-2608596401-Chamfer-Cylindrical/dp/B0014GPDHO

and it costs..

I wonder if the Ethernet connector on the RPi could be turned into a "MIDI RJ-45" plug where the Ethercon connector could be plugged in stray. I doubt that it can be done, though that would makes using the RPi a piece of cake.

Great work ! Thanks for sharing.

So as I understands it the Ethercon connector out of the MFC-101 transport the normal MIDI signal on the 2 pairs of wires on the RJ-45 link? Never investigated into that but that makes sense.

I think the MFC101 uses rs422 for transmission which is much faster than MIDI .

MIDI through theRPi ethernet port is tricky. You have to make the frame rate of the ethernet port 31Kbaud which is probably not a software thing because the ethernet bit rate is 100MHz as far as I know.

More trouble than its worth if ask me considering that there are probably UART's for RPi as well adruino.
