What's wrong with basswood from a tone perspective ?

I just think, it's the most bland one - I never played a basswood body that really inspired me to do anything. The nicest thing I ever said about a basswood guitar was that it was versatile.

Many of my favorite guitars are Alder. That being said, I've fallen in love with and hated guitars of most every variety. For ME, it really comes down to THAT particular accumulation of parts that makes or breaks it.
I LOVE roasted necks and have felt a couple of rosewood necks that were awesome as well.

Swamp ash with roasted maple neck and fretboard are working nicely for me.
