FM3 Favorite John Mayer Solos // Two Rock preset

Very nice stuff! Love the tone on you got on I Guess I Just Feel Like -- that song is beautiful the way so many Dire Straits' songs are beautiful. Perfect -- you want that outro to just go on and on and on. I loved that video of him tracking it too. Didn't he play a 335 in the video? And he was comping cuts together! Everyone comps in the studio! :D

Tough call though.

I think, if I had to pick just three, from recorded material it'd be:

  • Try, from the TRY! trio album
  • Gravity, from Where The Light Is
  • Heartbreak Warfare, from Battle Studies (I love the dissonance in those two note phrases he uses)

And it was hard to narrow it down to just three. :)

If I can pull from anything he's played on and not just his stuff then this would likely replace Heartbreak Warfare:

I love this because it's before John really got deep into studying Jerry so it's him, being him, ripping crazy good shit over top of one of my favorite Dead tunes backed by the band I think is pushing the Dead's music ahead the most these days: Joe Russo's Almost Dead.

Thanks! I can tell the newer updates have changed the way the amp sags, but I think maybe it’s gotten a bit closer. On that video of him he’s using an old Epiphone Casino. Sounds amazing and is totally something I wouldn’t ever consider john using.

You chose some really good ones! Try! is such a good song. If i was choosing live songs I think Covered in Rain might be up there.

The stuff he’s doing with Dead and Co is so special and speaks to him as a musical chameleon! He goes hardcore into the style he’s covering and it’s so cool and honoring.
