Drive Models Suck

Only noticed differences with SOd#3 and Tim#3

Amp/Amp settings have so much impact on drive pedals that when I hear peeps saying this or that pedal or pedal model "sucks" or "doesn't sound right" compared to same settings on the real life pedal, I wonder if it's usually more just an issue with their amp choice / amp settings than the actual pedal / pedal model / pedal settings.

I'm sure I'll show my complete ignorance on this one. The only two I've had a bit of real world experience with is a Tube Screamer clone and a little time with a Timmy, but don't even know which iteration. And I steer clear of the OD and DS-1 in the Fractal because I am not partial to the sound of either. So--my preferences are strictly on what sounds "best" to my ears rather than how close they are to the original. That being said, here goes nothin'.......

Tube Screamer--actually thought all 4 were passable, but preferred 2 & 4. Think 2 is the real pedal.

Super OD--Liked 1 & 3 the best, but 2 was really good too. Prefer sample # 3

DS-1--Preferred sample# 3 and 4. # 4 best.

Timmy--#2's the real pedal. But if I were using it, I would like the sound of #3 better.

I'll do a partial reveal:
The second take in each clip is the real pedal. The modelers are Axe-Fx, Brand L and Brand N. It's not about which "sounds best" it's about which most closely matches the real pedal.
OK, so I read down this far and I am kind of cheating. I'm on laptop speakers, and 1 and 4 are closer to the real pedal than 3 in every instance to my ear. 3 is really struggling to keep things under control with the DS-1, almost like its tending towards "blocking" distortion. I think 1 and 4 both do a pretty excellent job. On these speakers, 4 seems to have a slight edge in closeness of sound and feel, but both do an exceptional job. Might listen again on studio monitors, and on good headphones, but I think you have proved your point extremely well.

After reading the reveal on sample#2, here are my guesses as to which is the Fractal. Again, some others were very close.

TS--#4
OD--#3
DS--#4
Timmy--#1

One real pedal, three modelers (except for the Timmy for which the third modeler doesn't have a model).

Pedal into Band-Commander model set clean.

Super OD:

DS-1:

Timmy:

For the tubescreamer I don't have a clue, all sound very similar.
Super OD: axe is #1
DS1: axe is #4
Timmy: axe is #1

Anyway, with drives it's more difficult to pinpoint what's happening since they all go into an amp which adds its own distortion and even a minuscule level difference between the pedals could cause a hearable difference in tone, I hope the amp was set as clean as possible and the drive levels at unity. And maybe for this reason no two samples sound really the same, there's still some noticeable difference even between the real pedal samples and the ones I suppose are the axe models (especially on the ds1 clip).
Maybe if it was done thru a hiwatt it'd be easier for me to judge

I don't have to listen to all of this mumbo jumbo the AXE III kicks ass- blew countless amounts of money on line6 products - guitar modeling software - hardware etc. - payware presets - waste of money

You buy an AXE and problem solved - what an amazing product - wish I found it a long time ago :)

Oh and Fractal forum is so friendly and willing to help others in a moments notice
