Ok, so Joe has twice the number of fingers, but still....plays this so well. I am no jazz player, just appreciate nice guitar playing. Django was a master. Joe ain't bad
Awesome player and great take on "Minor Swing"...he plays with flair, passion, and fire indeed. I absolutely love guitar playing like this...thanks for the thread.
Django is pretty much my favorite player, and the swing of Gypsy Jazz gets me going like nothing else.
I've been getting my feet wet with Gypsy Jazz/Django compositions and "Minor Swing" is my entry point to all of that as it's relatively easy compared to many of Reinhardts' other tunes. The changes/chords are pretty straightforward so you can concentrate on developing the right hand swing/rhythm which is a signature of this genre and is called "La Pompe" ("the pump"). It all starts there...
This video lesson was the wedge that opened the door for me to really start to understand, and get a feel, for soloing over the changes. Learning these very simple patterns that follow the chord shapes for each change in "Minor Swing" and with a little practice you'll quickly get the 'flavor' and spirit of soloing in the genre that you can build from. This one definitely opened some doors for me and has gotten me on my way:
