Back when I cycling through tube amps I recall that I would constantly be tweaking my Mess MkIV to find that great tone just to come back to it the next day to discover my excellent tones from the night before sounded my compressed a$$ to me the next day. So it not just a modeler thing...

Yeah. Don't disagree. There's just not much you can do to your amp but come back the next day with fresh ears or accept it and play. With modelers, rightly or wrongly, I tweak more. Just because I can, I guess. I suspect part of it is simply that an amp in the room is almost instantly satisfying, almost regardless of where the knobs are. With a modeler, even after a decade or more living with them, I haven't truly acclimatised to playing through a mic'd cab instead of the real deal. I just can't honestly say that I can plug into any modeler, twiddle a few knobs and be done the way I can with an amp in the room. But I can't enjoy an amp in the room nearly as often as I can play through a modeler.
