Complete reseting FX II

Hello, I'm new with a FX II (second hand buy) and I want to completely reset the device. I've foud the "empty bank SysEx file already, thanks to this forum, but I'm unable to find the "clean system file" nor the "empty cab SysEx file". Don't understand why they simply can't be found on the Support/Download of the site. Who can help me, please? Thanks in advance:)

Hi Claude,
Forgive me if I steer you in the wrong direction here as it's been quite a while since I had the 2.
My recollection is that the factory cabs in the axe FX 2 are unable to be changed so you 'll need to have them there.
The factory presets and latest firmware can be found on Fractal's site here ; https://www.fractalaudio.com/axe-fx-ii-downloads/

Welcome!
Thanks
Pauly

Hi Pauly, thanks for your answer. But Fractal WIKI shows " Reset system parameters", and for Axe Fx II, they talk about these files I'm looking for. So it should be possible. But where are they?! I'm a bit worried this device is too complicated for me! It's very often the case with devices: it looks so easy to do when you read how to do... but very complicated when it comes to execute.

Hi Claude -
There a few other tid-bits around...

Reset the unit to factory by...
  1. Use the commands in the Utility menu to clear all presets and all user cabs.
  2. Execute the Reset System Params command in the Utility menu to restore alle parameters in Global, I/O and Tuner to factory defaults.
  3. The only left-overs will the Global Blocks data.
  4. Then load the factory presets again.
Also... this thread;

and this;

Personally, I'd keep at least bank 1 of the factory presets, but that's me! :)

Thanks
Pauly

No files are needed to clear everything out. Reset the system parameters from the Utility menu. In Axe Edit, open Manage Presets, select all the presets and delete them, then save. Open Manage Cabs and do the same there. It will take a while to update all the memory slots. Once that's done you can download and re-import the factory presets from the Fractal website. Factory cabs are part of the firmware and cannot be edited.

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow. But if no files are needed, why do we find about files in WIKI? Files I'm unable to find anywhere, by the way. Getting crazy...

One more thing, mr_fender: you say to open Manage presets and then Manage cabs in Axe edit. But! but in my Axe edit I've found nowhere such Manage ... to open. I can see only Preset which opens only the current preset, and further down Presets, which opens the list of all presets, but it can't be selected nor removed. (?!?!)

Well, I finaly found it ! (be comprehensive with non specialist newcomers:)) Now my Fx II is empty of all presets and cabs. But I didn't get how to install the factory banks A,B,C which I already downloaded from Fractal. I know this must be done through tne Axe edit, but how?

IMHO. FractalBot is best for handling Banks of presets.

So, there's a bit of improvement now. Hope is not lost ! I could remove all my prests and cabs. And I managed to load ABC banks using Fractal bot which tells me it was successful. But on the Axe, banks are still empty. I must have missed something. Before I also reset the System, through Utility on the Axe. And what about the cabs I removed? How to reload them ? Seems like I need some more help. But I want already thank everyone for your much appreciated support and help. Great forum, great people ! 👍😀

Try uploading the Banks one at a time. You downloaded a compressed zip file - so make sure it's expanded/extracted and then inside that folder you'll see 'AllFiles' and also 3 separate BankA, BankB and BankC files - so try uploading the individual Bank files one at a time using FractalBot.

You can also try restarting the AxeFX after all are reported as uploaded by FractalBot

And what about the cabs I removed? How to reload them ?
'Factory' Cabs can't be deleted so you must have deleted 'User' Cabs previously - these would have been third party Cabs loaded by the previous owner. If you didn't back these up before deleting then they are now gone for ever. Don't worry you still will have plenty of perfectly fine Factory Cabs to play with while getting used to the AxeFX and maybe sometime later can consider if you want to load in third party cabs from commercial sources or shared free user cabs from the axe-change site.

Once you have the Factory Preset Banks loaded they will have been built to only use 'Factory' Cabs so you'll have no ill effects from having deleted the User cabs

What firmware version is on the Axe FX? Presets created with firmware newer than what you currently have will not show up. Also, make sure you download the firmware and factory presets for the correct version of Axe II as well (mark I/II, XL, or XL+). They are not cross compatible in some cases. Aries 2.0 is the latest version.

Me again. Not tired yet?;) You're great. Yes, Maxdown, files were extracted and the AxeFx turned off and on again after loading with Bot.
And yes, mr_fender, it seems like I have Aries 2.0 version (showing on Axe edit)
May Bank folders be only 810ko? It seems light to me...

Yes - those Bank files are correct file size.

What happens in Axe-Edit when you right click on an empty block in the grid? Do you get any options to add a block type (Amp, Cab, Chorus etc.)?

Well anyway taking easiest route of trial and error what I would try next would be:

Go to fractalaudio downloads page again and this time download the 'Quantum' firmware for the AxeFxII Mk1/2

Install that firmware with FractalBot

Still no presets? Then install Preset banks again

If it works like that then you can try updating firmware again to Ares one 'over the top' of Quantum and Presets.

-----------------------

If that doesn't work then I'd be thinking of trying changing the battery inside the AxeFX (and can check various cables are firmly seated while it is open).

The AxeFX II Mk1/Mk2 is the correct age now for the internal battery to start failing (10 years minimum life supposedly) and needing replaced. It's a CR2450 coin battery I think.

Unscrew the screws on the lid of the AxeFX and lift it up slowly - there is a cable from the fan unit on the underside of the lid that needs disconnected before the lid can be fully lifted off.

Once lid is off you will see the battery and can gently remove it/replace it

Have a quick look at all the other cable connectors while you can and gently push them to ensure everything is firmly connected

Re-assemble the lid and fan connection

Test again - re-install firmware and cabs if still nothing shows

------------------------------------

Those are all the easy do it yourself options I can think of at this stage

If you still have the problem after that then I think you would be best to contact your nearest Fractal support for advice - G66.eu if you are in EU or Fractalaudio US if you are elsewhere in the French speaking world.

They might be able to help you undertake some tests and reset options using special start up button push sequences without needing to send the device to them. They will have heard of every type of issue by now and have a good idea on how it can be fixed I'm sure!

I see another forum user @dpavel seemed to have a similar issue:

https://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/help-my-axefx-2-xl-wont-save-presets.172837/

However no follow up post from them about any successful solution .... maybe they can let us know now?

I can't believe it but... IT WORKS !!! What would I've done without your help? Cry and play accoustic guitar, I suppose. Thank you. But a very special thank to mr_fender and to you, Maxdown, who found THE solution: download the old Quantum, then download the banks again, and finaly, because it worked like that, load the new Ares firmware. Not evident to think of that! I'm sure that even at Fractal, some guys would'nt have thought of this solution. Now you deserve some vacation. The positive side of all this is that in 2 or 3 days I've learn more about the AxeFxII than I would have in weeks if all had been right. Let's rock now ! 😎
