Classic Songs whose mixes still hold up this day

As soon as I saw the thread title, I thought "Rage For Order". The production on that was and is so good.

A few more albums that stand out to me for being ahead of the curve...
The Cars - self titled
Run For Cover - Gary Moore
Disillusion - Loudness
Metal Church - self titled
Friday Night in San Francisco - McLaughlin, Di Meola, de Lucia
Texas Flood - SRV
VH1

I know this thread is about "classic" songs, but good production didn't stop after 1980. ;)

Recent things definitely worth a listen:
  • David Bowie "Blackstar" (2017)
  • Alison Krauss "Paper Airplane" (2012)
  • Norah Jones "Come Away With Me" (2003)
  • Flaming Lips "At War with the Mystics" (2007)

This!!! Walk in the Shadows pushes air. So does Empire but Empire's production is a tad more slick. In both of those albums the drums are mixed very well. I like a song who's drums punch and jive with the bass. In the 80's era it was all guitar and EQ was an afterthought, IMO. But you take Rage Against the Machine or Audioslave; What I really like about those mixes are that the guitar is really clean and combined with the bass it creates a more distorted, heavier guitar/rhythm tone.

Was listening to The English Beat in the car yesterday. Keep the Beat, their '82 best of sounds fan-tas-tic still. Very forward mix, bright tones.

Helps that the ska is top notch as well.
