Chorus Question (applies to flanger & phaser too)

Is there any way to totally stop the chorus rate (make it zero)? Hope so, because I sometimes do this to fatten the tone without adding any modulation. My EHX Stereo Electric Mistress has a very cool feature where as you turn the rate down it totally stops and allows you to manually sweep through the Chorus and 'park' there (they call it 'filter matrix' mode)

Hmm. A chorus is a delay whose time is set off and modulated. Turn off modulation and your left with a short delay. Try detune instead

To make a chorus or flanger static set depth to zero. To modulate manually attach an expression pedal to the delay time.
Since the chorus does not allow delay time to be modulated use the flanger with no feedback and higher delay times or the delay block with delay times modulated around times under 50 ms.

The problem with depth set to zero is that the stereo image is minimized or lost completely - too bad there's not a zero setting for the rate.

A Stereo Chorus usually has each side of the processed signal out of phase, hence the exaggerated stereo effect

Simple answer, YES AND NO!

You can create this effect on the Axe-Fx, but once you do, it is no longer a chorus-- merely a short delay (or two if you have any time offsets between channels).

Here are some precise tips on how to achieve the effect you're after with the CHORUS block.

1. Begin with the DEPTH at 0.00 as JJ Describes in post #3
2. Make sure the WIDTH and SPREAD are at 100%. VOICES should be set to 2. Set the starting mix to about 50%
3. Set the delay TIME to 0 and start listening while you turn it up. Each tick will produce a very different result. Use Axe-Edit to achieve very fine adjustment granularity.
4. Adjust the MIX to taste.
5. To create even wider effects, try small downward adjustments to WIDTH or set the PHASE so that the LEFT or BOTH channels are phase reversed. Beware... things get funky if you overdo width effects!

Now that you've got something nice, consider trying it as a "true" chorus.

- Set the waveform to TRIANGLE for starters.
- Set the rate to say, 1.2 Hz and slowly add some DEPTH.
- Consider setting LFO phase to 180 degrees.

Try some other waveforms and phase adjustments. TRAPEZOID/90... SINE 15... experiment.

Note: All of the above can also be done with the FLANGER, where you also have some additional parameters to explore.

Thanks Admin - On my Boss units even with the Rate at zero, increasing the depth control widens the stereo image in a different and more dramatic way than changing the pre-delay.... maybe it won't work the same on AFX ll....

Depth on the axe-fx isn't about stereo imaging, it is about the maximum delay variation. When your rate is at 0 there is no variation. That is why you set the depth to 0. It effectively puts the rate at 0.

for widening the stereo impage do what matt said here:
