Maybe I missed it all these years (I've been using either presets or my own templates forever). Would like to be able to "insert blank column" just to be able to add a new type of block without having to move everything over manually.

No, but you can move a different column over to where you want one inserted in Axe Edit. Grab the little handle below that column under the grid display to move the whole column.

yeah, doesn't need to be a new feature...it already exists. as mr fender says...just drag an empty column over to where you need it. simples.
