Cab / mic cheat sheet

With the thousands of IRs with a variety of speakers and mics, I'm a bit lost on how to go about picking a cab to pair with an amp.
Add to that the possibility of mixing 4 IRs and the combinations are endless. Does anyone have a method or a layman explanation of what each type of speaker / mic sounds like, which sound good mixed together and what type of cab matches well to an amp family ?

@2112 recommends setting focus on the cab select control and cycling through them without looking. That way you can stop and bookmark it when you hear what you like rather than selecting something because it has a particular type of cab named in its title. He also recommends recording a snippet in the looper and playing that back, so you are comparing apples to apples, and so you don't end up looking like iGor from Young Frankenstein from leaning over it to poke buttons....
