Best I/O for using 2 AXE-FX

I now have a Standard and an Ultra and I want to hook them up in a "stereo" type configuration. Kind of like what Joe Bonamassa does where he always has 2 amps running. I have a Mesa 50/50 power amp and I want to run the ultra on one side and the standard on the other. I could just use a double 1/4 + 1/4 female to 1/4 mono male adapter but I see where the I/O can be configured for the output to be L+R SUM or L->R. I don't know why those two would sound any different from each other but there must be a reason for the two choices?

Using the same type of Y connector that I mentioned above this could also be run with both units in true stereo through the same power amp by taking the R from the ultra and the standard to one side of the Mesa and the L from the ultra and the standard to the other side. That might sound even better but I would loose the choice of having one cab or two cabs while using an A/B switch at the inputs of both units. If anyone has tried this set up, please let me know if you ran into any problems and what you ended up doing.
Thanks,
Tony

One Mixes the L & R together, the other copies the Left signal to the right (so the left signal is all you get coming out both out puts). they can sound very different. Use Copy L->R with a ping pong delay and you will only get ping and no pong :D

You could also run the two in series. Go S/PDIF out on one to S/PDIF in on the other. You could still do all the stuff you want but getting stereo effects working right would be a lot easier. You could use the Ultra for front end effects, 2 amp & cab models, plus ultra specific effects and the standard for everything else.

Wow, 24 blocks in a row, not counting possibilities with the feedback blocks

That is not going to work guys. If you go Digital IN on an AXE. #2...you HAVE to go digital out.

I intended to do this months ago......won't work.

How did you end up setting yours up for the best results?

I think I would run the standard in the loop of the ultra. This way you could dedicate the standard to dual amp and cab setups and the ultra to effects and mixing. If you pan the amps har left and right in the standard then you can mix the return in the ultra. You could also attach a controller to the pan in the loop return of the ultra and fade between the two amps in real time.

Do you guys really use this much FXs? Man, that's crazy. I wouldn't mind having more options (multiple mics) with mics on the same cab, though having a second Ultra wouldn't solve this. Anyway, you guys are animals. :D
