Baffled by loss of patches

I have been playing through Fractal stuff since 2009. I am using an Fm9 with the 8.02 version 2 Beta. I run that through a powered Atomic CLR at home. At the rehearsal studio I run it through a different powered Atomic CLR.

At home and until now, at rehearsal, it works fine. But today at rehearsal of the 7 or so different presets I use, only one worked, that is generated sound Not one other preset of the 30 or so I checked worked, including ones I made as well as stock ones I never touched. Back home, I checked the weirdness by plugging it into my home CLR. Here without doing anything else, all the presets worked. What is going on?

I power cycled it three or four times at the studio and that didn't change anything. Any ideas?

This might be a silly question, but were you using different physical outs in one scenario vs the other, and if yes, was the physical volume knob turned up?

I had no sound at a gig last week and trouble shot with spare cables, guitar straight into amp - only to find i had the volume knob turned down 🙄

If using different outs, are those Out blocks present in your preset, and/or are you copying Out 1 to Out 2, etc.?

Thanks. I did check that. And I was getting sound out my preset number 9, but no sound out of all the other 30 or so presets I tried.

that's a good suggestion. But I can't do until I am in rehearsal studio again. Since I am not having the same problem at home, I think it must the Atomic CLR in the studio. But how could that possibly cut out all the presets but one? I guess I will have to bring my own CLR to the studio next time to be safe. This really baffles me.

Because the problem continued through power-cycling, I’d lean towards something being wrong with a cable or the CLR, that it’s not the FM9. Like Cliff says, it’s always a cable.

IF it happens again, a good diagnostic is to plug in some headphones to the FM9 and confirm that it’s generating output all the way to Out 1. That’ll show whether to look further inside the unit or outside it.

Without more information, we can only speculate.

But how could that possibly cut out all the presets but one?
Weird luck?

I would also lean towards something with the cabling or even an output knob not turned up. Do you use an expression pedal with a volume block. If so, any chance the one preset that was working didn't have the volume block?

I thought it might be the guitar cable or XLR cable as I use different ones in home and studio. So I tried both at home and I can't replicate the problem. All my patches work at home with either set of cables. Using AX edit to scroll through everything I do see that the one patch that worked was one from Austin Buddy that finished with a send to both Output 1 and Output 2. That was the only patch I tried that used Output 2. However, I for sure had my Output 1 volume at 80% and Output 2 at 60% (and Output 3 at 50%) when the other patches weren't working.

The only things that are different now are the a different Atomic CLR unit and time of day/position of stars. Could the cab be responsible for this?

I'm voting stars.

On a more serious note, do you have an expression pedal attached, set to volume?

I occasionally get unexpected results, and then see the expression at the half way position - meaning my wah is half cocked, or a Ray Gun sound in mixed in when it shouldn't be.

I do have an expression pedal attached that is sometimes wah, sometimes volume., sometimes not active. It was in each of those states in at least some of the non-audible presets I tried in the studio yesterday. And I did check the pedal in the studio to see if perhaps that was why there was no volume. We were having a rain/thunder storm a little before this happened yesterday. A friend thinks a voltage fluctuation at the outlet might have caused the presets to drop out. I have played through Fractal in a lot of places with sketchy power before though and this has never happened.

Now that is possible. I just turned 64 and do stupid stuff like that from time to time. Your solution is the most likely.

What kind of CPU are the presets running at? If they are close to the higher recommended limit (around 80%) then the FM9 may have cut the audio. If you’ve installed new firmware, certain presets that worked before might increase in CPU usage with tweaks in the software. I’ve had it before where a preset runs fine at the upper limit and the one day it’ll just tick over by 1% and the audio will stop
