Manual Controllers allow you to use a modifier to control various parameters without needing an expression pedal, MIDI source, or other controller. You assign the Manual knob as desired parameter(s) and then operate with from the Controllers menu, or from the new Perform pages! This brings the best of pedalboard-style knob tweaking possibilities right to your front panel.

A simple example might be feedback+motor speed on one knob. In complex creations, you can do macro-controls. For example, the "Vintage Vinyl ABCD" preset, manual knobs were used across a range of modifiers for easy access to 33-45-78, Crackle, Hum, and Warp controls.

Think of them as 'virtual' expression pedals. A single knob (Manual Controller) in the Performance screen could be attached to several parameters across several blocks, each with their own (best) start, stop, mid, damping, slope, etc.. settings.

As an example.... Lets say you have a few blocks dedicated to a 'shimmer' sound. You could attach a Manual controller to the 'Mix', 'Input Trim', 'Level', 'Feedback', etc parameters of some, or all of the blocks (as needed), then set the start and stop values to the best settings for each parameter in the 'Edit Modifier' windows. Now you can sweep from the best minimum settings to the best maximum settings of all of those parameters with a single knob.

There are advantages even when attaching to a single parameter.... You can set the min and max values to a defined 'usable range'. This eliminates the chances of over-shooting and/or under-shooting the desired values.

Not sure if this was fixed or in patch notes, but was using beta 6.0 last night and whenever I used the tuner the volume wouldn't start unless I saved the patch I was in.

A full Axe-Edit release is a day or two away which will include a new Performance screen to allow for drag-and-drop Perform control assignment and support for the Manual Modifiers.

For now, please use the below beta version which provides basic Performance Control support:

OSX:
www.fractalaudio.com/downloads/Axe-Edit-III/Axe-Edit-III-OSX-v1p01p09-b2.dmg

Windows:
www.fractalaudio.com/downloads/Axe-Edit-III/Axe-Edit-III-Win-v1p01p09-b2.exe

Being able to load a (user-defined) template for the PP Perform would be SUCH a time saver. Just a basic template, nothing fancy.
