Axe-Fx III Firmware Release Version 17.00 Public Beta

Just out of curiosity, has anyone used the new cab feature yet? I have seen a lot of people up in arms about this but haven't seen a good example as to why. I thought the examples Cliff gave sounded cool but to see this amount of "what about me", I would like to see it in application....not doubting its a big deal, but maybe not a big enough deal to start selling off gear or feeling left out about.

This is how it should remain, but in the FX3 we have a fixed allocation of the memory currently. No matter whether you place an IR in the slot or not, this is due to the start but also clear division of the memory. It would be good if this could be more flexible. Even today I can store the same IR 2048 x in the FX3 because we work with slots. So it would also remain with my idea so.

Version 17 introduces FullResTM Impulse Response processing. FullRes processes IRs up to 64K points with zero latency using a novel technique. This provides up to 1.37 seconds of response time. Seasoned producers and engineers often mix in “Room Mics” during recording to increase the depth and liveliness of recordings. However, the typical live room has a reverb time of 500-700 milliseconds, well beyond the 20-40 ms afforded by typical IR processing. FullRes allows capturing the full response of a typical live room and even the response of small-to-medium halls and clubs. FullRes can also be used for convolution reverb applications for reverb times less than 1.37 seconds.

NOTE: FullRes processing is currently only supported on the Axe-Fx III Mark II. The original Axe-Fx III has less non-volatile memory and therefore does not have the necessary resources to store the IRs.

The IR Player block and the Cabinet block both support FullRes IRs. The last two slots of the Cabinet block support FullRes. This is sufficient to provide two room mics, a left and a right, along with two direct mics within a single Cabinet block.

The two IR Player blocks have been combined into a single, stereo IR Player block with individual level and pan controls for each IR. Setting the IR Length to OFF defeats the IR. A Mix control is also provided so the block can be used as a convolution reverb. A Mode control allows the two IRs to be in parallel or series. When in series the individual level and pan controls are defeated and removed from the UI.

The new FullRes User IR bank supports up to 64 FullRes IRs. When capturing an IR selecting the USER FR bank will automatically set the IR Type to FullRes. Likewise, when setting the IR Type to FullRes the bank will automatically be set to USER FR. FullRes IRs can be processed with minimum-phase or auto- trim, if desired. However, minimum-phase is not recommended as this will tend to destroy the reflection information.

A FullRes Scratchpad is also implemented for auditioning IRs during the capture process. A new version of Cab-Lab is forthcoming which will support FullRes IR captures and management.

IR management has been completely rewritten providing smoother performance and better integration with Axe-Edit.

Increased Mic Distance range in Cabinet block to 3.4m (~11 feet). This allows delaying room mic IRs that have been trimmed to remove the leading silence. The alignment graph now features a Zoom control that changes the abscissa between 3ms and 12ms.

Improved Pitch Detection performance.

The UI has been improved to support double-tap of certain keys as follows:
• Double-tapping EDIT edits the previous block.
• Double-tapping HOME enters the layout grid.
• Double-tapping STORE prompts immediately.
• When on the Home page double-tapping the Quick Entry knobs does the following:
o A: Enters the Amp 1 menu.
o B: Enters the Drive 1 menu.
o C: Enters the Cab 1 menu.
o D: Enters the Delay 1 menu.
o E: Enters the Reverb 1 menu.

Various fixes and improvements.
So how about a memory upgrade for my Axe III so I can use this??????

Certainly the IR mangment of today in FX3 needs to be reconsidered. Yes the disadvantage in my idea is that there can be currently duplicate user IR. But how is it currently when a user passes on his preset which is bound with a user IR. There is nothing to hear because the user IR is missing.
If it is a purchased IR, the user must also be able to decide whether the IR is stored in the preset or not. Currently we are using slots and not names for the assignment.
Which results in an occupancy table that must be checked regularly by the FX3.

I didn`t update yet.
Can anyone tell any difference in the AMP tones?

Somthing better or all equall as 16.05?

Yes i read the Release notes and thought that

"Various fixes and improvements"

take some fixes and improvements
You're right... That could include changes although Cliff usually calls them out for the amp stuff.

Apologies for my bad assumption.

I have tried the axe in the return of the head and my cab for the first time (wow it’s raining) and I m really impressed how the preamps are great . I understand why many people play with a cab. Sound really like a head . Really impressed.
The differences between the amps are not huge having the same cab and poweramp for them all, everything sound “the same” in a way, but it’s fun .

And once again … the afd sound completely off compared to all the others heads . I say this since the beginning but no way this head sound like this . Testing only the preamp with the cab is another proof.

If fractal can check this amp one day 🥰.
hats down for your product . Simulation is clearly in another planet with the axe

Channel 3 of the Diezel VH4 sounds unusually weak with firmware 16.x.
Has anyone tried whether this has changed with 17 beta?

I have a quick stupid question .don’t want to open a topic for that …
If your chain is full mono , that’s not a problem to go just with one xlr or one jack in the mixing desk ? No need to put L and R we are ok ?
The sound is just a little louder when I put 2 jacks / xlr but that’s all . This is something since the beginning that I wonder …
