The FC units don't contain the smarts to control other devices. They're simply extensions of the III -- all the smarts are in the III. This wouldn't be possible.

I would guess there is a way to develop a stand alone type of box that connects to the FC's and give them some "brains", but, the cost would likely make it as expensive, if not more so, than simply buying a controller with "brains' like an RJM etc, when you factor in the price of the FC as well.

Given that this would be a very low demand product as well, I can't see the R&D cost be justified to develop.

Probably some sort of third party Arudio based device for the DIY'r would be the only real feasible option, but then again, how many would want to spend $500/700 for a controller and then have to essentially hack it to work with other devices. Plenty of turn key stuff on the market that can do that better, or, there are cheap options like the L6 controllers which seemingly can be hack'd to give them some midi/usb control, but certainly not a simple process.

I think best to think the of FC's as a III specific controller, for which I think they will work fantastic

The Axe-Fx III can do that. Connect the FC-6/12 to the III, have the III send MIDI messages to the II. I didn't say it would be pretty or practical, just possible ;-)
But seriously, there should be lots of MFC-101s for sale cheap right now as many people upgrade to the Axe-Fx III.

That's may not be as crazy as it sounds. If you were in a band situation, you could have one Axe-Fx III acting as a master for some Axe-FX IIs, and chain the FCs :)
