Yeah...seems like this is for a radio show hence a quiet studio. But they sound somewhat like his acoustic drums which lends me to think he might be using triggers live.

That looks like a Green Room and would not be used for the real performance. Just a place to warm up.

The SPL meter would be to make sure you don't get too loud and bleed into the broadcast booth mics?

Obviously James uses the exact same tone for the whole song, and probably even the whole set.
