AX8 Reamping into Logic Pro X

Howdy people,

Recently picked up an AX8, and am having a hard time figuring out how to reamp my AX8 into logic pro X so that I can have a track playing and edit the tone in real time through AX8Edit. Currently, I am able to have my AX8 hooked up to my Focusrite Saffire Pro 26 through XLR cables, and have the output go to my studio monitors. I am able to record in logic pro x with this current set up, however when I have logic and ax8edit opened a the same time, ax8edit freezes/sends error messages, and the AX8 unit freezes up as well. Im hoping reamping will solve this problem? I've seen some videos stating I need to add an FX loop to the front of my signal chain, but I'm not sure how i need to run the cables from the FXsend out on the Ax8 into my interface, then back from the interface into the AX8. Also, I'm confused on how to properly set up my signal path in the Saffire Mix control, and am unsure if I need to do anything inside logic once I have the signal path correct in the saffire mixer. Any help/tips to get me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

You'll still need AX8Edit open with Logic if you want to adjust your sound during re-amping, so that won't fix the "AX8 unit freezes up" problem that you describe. It sounds like Logic is sending MIDI to the AX8, and/or there may be a MIDI loop. You may want to check your Logic MIDI Environment and ensure that the AX8 isn't sending or receiving any MIDI through Logic.

Easiest way to re-amp is to treat the AX8 like an amp and run it through a re-amp box: https://forum.fractalaudio.com/thre...-noise-whats-wrong-solved.121320/post-1445028

I'm pasting below the URL for a thread that covers the topic. I've been recording the AX8: Main Outs and a DI (Send 1) into Logic for all of the 3+ years I've had it (and with a few different interfaces) and never had a problem. You just need to add a cable from the Send 1 to interface to record DI, and one cable to AX8 Return for reamping.

I've never had the AX8Edit MIDI problem you describe, however IIRC, AX8 is hardwired as MIDI Ch 1: So if there is some conflict with another MIDI device or Port configuration: that would be the place to look.

I've included a DI as a "safety track" as SOP when recording for many years: It's de rigueur when recording bass: and very handy to have on hand for guitar as well, for additional treatment, or as something a MIDI pitch plugin can read for scoring parts or a synth pad or what not. so The advantage of doing the DI with the AX8 is you get a signal that will, when reamping, give you an identical tone to the original (if all AX8 patch settings are the same) if you just get the return level to match the original guitar level: whereas a DI derived from another source won't give an identical result as no two DI devices sound the same. Once you get it set up: its easy and reliable.
