It helps keep sweat from running down your arm, into your fret hand and fingers.....also helps your picking arm slide/move freely as it rests on the upper gtr body.
I've seen James Hetfield, Brian May and others wear them.
You can find them at most athletic stores. Some guitarists have also been known to use cut off black/white/whatever colour you want socks. I've tried both the store bought ones and socks and both work really well for free arm mobility and sweaty fingers/slipping picks.
LOW TECH SOLUTION..I take a new pair a black crew socks, cut the toes off two inches before the heel. Put the sock on your arm, heel first just past your elbow. This keeps it in place. It reduces friction over the back of the guitar AND eliminates sweat. Kind of like finger ease for your forearm.
