Anyone have an electric car?

I am looking into saving the Tesla Cybertruck.

From the dimensions of the bed and the ramp, it will make moving cabs around cheaper in the long run for me.

Not the same thing, but my daughter has a 2014 Prius C. Seriously not fast, which is ok, but replacing just the small starter battery was surprisingly expensive, and getting a jump while it was dying was trickier than expected.

New car time and thinking about going electric.
Drove my first electric this past week. A Tesla. The deceleration is weird because of the recapture of energy. I did not like that. All else cool and I'm sure I'd get use to it. Power is instant and feels like you are in a jet!

Electric is the obvious way to go for a 4x4
No more complicated transmissions
No more locking diffs and hubs
Just a motor in each wheel and go

I also feel that solar panels and an EV for commuting is a good combination.
I liked the idea to use the car as a surplus electricity storage unit.
My van sits in the garage most of the time as I go to work on my motorbike.

Why diesel and gas powered cars are still popular and ar hard to beat is because of two things:
  • filling is a lot faster than charging
  • more power/weight ratio
  • available at ambient temperatures
The last two are also important when considering alternate fuels like hydrogen.

Maybe the industry will wake up and make fuel efficient cars.
In the 50's there was an Opel Commodore that could drive more than 100 km with 1 litre of fuel.
Shell bought it and all the patents and it was never heard of again.
Same for lots of other patents for duel saving measures. All in the hands of the oil industry.

The whole patent system is flawed.
Anyone who invents something should only have to register it and anyone who wants to use is should pay some kind of copyright fee.
That way, no one, who has an interest in putting it away never to be used, can buy a patent.
You forgot instantly available, 100% torque across the entire power band. Traction is the only limiter to torque to the ground.

You can turn it off.

Tesla Model 3 AWD long-range here for 17 months. It's fun. No regret. Getting Full Self Drive in the next update, but summon was already in it.
When you go to the store and it's raining, it can come and pick you up!

true
ICE's never are that efficient.
Even with tricks like variable camshaft timing
They can sort of flatten the curve but will never be as efficient as an electric motor where torque is available form the get go.
Most people also focus on horsepower (which is torque x revs/min) .
What you need is torque, that' s what gets you moving and what gives you the acceleration
HP is only needed for max speed.

Thanks. Don't need or even want autopilot, just a super reliable, safe car that handles well.

Is the 3 crappy?
Reliable? You don't want a Tesla.

Google is not friendly to these search words: https://lmgtfy.app/?q=tesla+reliability

Take your pick of low-reliability scores from that search.

Innovative and cutting edge? That's Tesla.

Great QC, fit and finish, long term reliabiliyt? That's not Tesla.

To be fair to them: they're working on it. See: https://www.businessinsider.com/tes...sumer-reports-car-brand-survey-ranking-2020-2

Not crappy at all! It's a fun car! Even the AutoPilot (which is different from the Full Self Driving) is super convenient.
But regardless of these. It's pretty, it's fast, it's electric, it has a nice sound system (option). Frunk, full glass top.
No oil change. No leaking oil gaskets, you save on gas. Continues software updates with new features. Oh, a bunch of safety technologies.

There were emerging lanes on the Highway and the other car didn't' yield us and the AutoPilot noticed it and corrected our path to prevent the crash.

From the reviews I've seen, apparently Tesla manufacturing sucks initially when they introduce a model, and then they improve it over the next year or two. Model 3 should be fine by now I imagine.

New? You can get a 3 for $37,990 plus taxes. That's the barest bones 3. No auto-pilot or anything.
That's with "potential incentives or gas savings of $4300" which, depending on the circumstances you may or may not get. Price needs to come down at least 10K before it's anywhere near the mass market option.

No. That’s without their funny math.
