Any tips for creating an IR for a noob

You need a mic, interface/preamp, cabinet (and speaker(s)), associated cables, the AxeFX, and time. Bonus points for a speaker level DI to capture the amp tone, so you can run it through the Axe's special stuff to take the amp tone out of it. Not sure if the FM3 supports IR captures, someone else will be sure to reply and say it.

If this sounds like too much effort, time, or money, use the ones built in to the unit. If there's something missing in those (considering how many there are I doubt it but that's up to you), then buy extra ones.

There are hundreds in the unit itself. You don't need to create or buy any.
I'd argue creating some is a powerful tool that more people should do, that's how each player gets their own sound- using their own equipment and knowledge to mic their own cab.

Purchasing other people's? Not an argument I care discussing, I'll stay neutral

I'd argue that with the breadth of adjustments in the systems and the variety of factory cabs, it's hardly likely that people using them will sound alike. Even starting with the same factory preset they're going to sound different if they start tweaking. And that doesn't even get into the differences of guitars and their personal touch.

Creating an IR is doable on the FX3. The FM3 can't.

Sure, but there's just something special and unique about creating your own IR and sound.
Up to the player of course, nothing is right or wrong in this world, just personal preference.

Cliff, in the IR Length thread, talked about the work they did trying to get an IR shot and how trying to deal with reflections was a pain.

It seems to boil down to "We're going to need a bigger room", and he's got a warehouse to use.
