Another interesting recording comparison...

Hey man, kickass tones in there, especially the distorted one that starts at 3:50. Really distorted, but with a lot of punch and no "harsh" frequencies at all.
Do you find it is so much different to recording direct vs with a tube power amp + cabs + mic?
I had a Standard some time ago, and I'm looking for an Ultra, but I'm not still really sure about that...
I've also used the 512 pre in a studio, amazing preamp!
 
The API definitely adds some sparkle in the highs, and ab it more in the high mids. I also find there's a lot more clarity... the difference isn't even so much in the actual sound, but how easy it would be to fit into a mix I think...
 
Thanks for this. The API clips are a bit louder which can be misleading, bit I think they sound a lot better than the 003 preamps. I'd be interested to hear a comparison with direct recording using IRs, to hear the effect of each preamp.
