You should give the AMP dynamics section a look and in particular try out the "Feedback" Compressor type.

From the manual:

"The “FEEDBACK” type likewise compresses the block output, but also applies dynamics to the input of the block, so you will also get more distortion as you play harder and less when you play softer or roll back the volume."

I'm finding this gives amps a nice growl when playing hard but gives way to better crunch when playing single notes or picking through chords. It's way too easy to dial in loads of gain and get one steady tone out of the amp models. This seems to make them more lifelike, to me anyway...

If you've used the amp block feedback before, you'll want to experiment with different threshold settings. First, turn it all the way up to 0dB then dial back down to taste. The lower the threshold, the more the pre-block gain will be.

I’ve been using this on almost all my patches for a long while now.. this in conjunction with the Speaker Compression in the speaker tab.
Between the two, they really help dial in the feel of the amp.
