Am I going Mad or do I have a dodgy Ultra

I've only had my Ultra for the last 3 days, I desperately trying to get it working.
I have a Marshall 6100 head and cab which I'd like to use the 4 cable method on however I get a very muddy sound when setup. Ive disabled the global power amp and cabs and set the input to rear. To trouble shoot Ive tried just using the Ultra in the effects loop in the serial config, Ive used the bypass patch and havnt touched any other settings (apart from the globals above) and still get a muddy sound with no where near the volume/gain/shimmer I get from the uneffected amp. Ive checked the cables, and the loop by plugging the cables from the Marshall Effect loop send to loop return and get a great sound, but as soon as I introduce the Ultra things sound terrible. Ive tried max output on the Ultra with a blank patch and still cant get the volume, I've also tried both -10db and +4db switch on the Marshall loop.
All this and I havnt even tried the effects yet!!
Please can anyone help?

Thanks for the reply. The problem seems to be pilot error (story of my life!), the marshall has a loop send pot on both the first and second channels, this wasnt set anywhere near high enough, Ive spent some time gettings levels and can honestly say Ive never heard a processor that colours the uneffected sound so little (I cannot hear ANY difference between in the loop and no loop), Im very very impressed, I've never even been able to use the serial routing in the past due to colouration.

Now all I have to do is try to model the 6100 crunch and lead channels, and thats gonna be no mean feet!

My only question remaining is do I go for it and use the Ultra at the gig tonight!

Thanks again.
