So no one answered my question in the forums, but seems after careful digging, it really isn't possible for the AES input channel to be assigned to anything but input 1.
Hoping this is can be a software fix and not something hardwired to the machine. It's a shame there isn't an ADAT output port either to add the 8 channels on the fractal to an existing system!
