Axe-Fx II "Ares" Rev 1.01 Firmware Release

    Fantastic! Thank you!

Axe-Fx II Firmware "Ares" 1.00 Public Beta

The III has been out for a while now, and yet there have still been new updates to wring every bit of fidelity out of the II. I can't think of another product I've owned that has had this level of support/growth for existing and previous iterations. This is why Fractal is so far ahead of its...

    Testing MFC with no Axe-FX?

I have bad luck with them, too, but that's how I had it hooked up when I updated the firmware.
  6. Tom

    Testing MFC with no Axe-FX?

Oh, all right. The Tab is hooked into the USB, Tab's MIDI out into the MFC's MIDI in, MFC's MIDI out into the Tab's MIDI in.
  7. Tom

    Testing MFC with no Axe-FX?

I used a MIDI1x1 Tab. I also tried the same thing with my Liquid Foot, but the monitors didn't show any input there, either. I'm probably just going about this wrong.

    Testing MFC with no Axe-FX?

I'm trying to sell my MFC-101 (Mark I) that has been sitting around unused for the last few years. I'd like to test it to make sure it's working properly before I sell it so somebody, but I don't have an Axe-FX to test it with anymore. I tried hooking it up to MIDI-OX and watching the monitors...

This sounds perfect! I'll download it next time I'm on the computer my Axe-FX is hooked up to. Cheers!

Tips on getting rid of pick attack?

Find the frequency range that the pick attack is in and cut it a bit with the PEQ. You could also use picks that have softer edges, like Jazz IIIs.

Finally Gigging with my AxeFXII & Matrix GT1000FX Setup!

That sounded pretty good! But yeah, your vocalist really seemed through the whole video like he'd rather be anywhere other than behind the mic. Edit: In that case, I can understand him not looking thrilled. It's difficult to try to do anything at all when you're fighting a stomach bug.

Axe FX II: Steven Wilson rhythm tone (Progressive rock)

Going for the Deadwing tone, eh? I'm pretty sure that album was actually recorded with a POD XT. Great tone (and great album), but I probably prefer his tone on In Absentia, personally. Oh, also, the clip sounds convincing!

Yeah, I realized that shortly after I posted, but your response was quicker than my edit!

I think I agree with the popular guess. Also, that riff sounds familiar. Porcupine Tree? Edit: Nevermind, it's Rage Against The Machine.

    Are you tired of FRFR?

I think a lot of that has to do with 1) the difference in construction of guitar speakers versus PA speakers, and 2) the method of capturing speaker IRs which requires use of a microphone. PA speakers sound more consistent from different angles and distances, and guitar speakers vary, often...
  18. Tom

    Are you tired of FRFR?

I do kind of miss having a 4x12 sometimes. The benefit is mostly aesthetic and psychological, though, and the extra versatility and more convenient form factor of a wedge outweighs the badassery of rocking a 4x12.

    Vents and dust

I covered the vents on mine with packing tape, because I live in a very dusty area, and I figured it would be fine since the Mark Is don't have vents and haven't seemed to suffer for it. I've had no issues thus far, though it's nice to see that quote from Cliff confirming that I didn't do...

    Why all the Metal??????

Maybe I'm missing whatever you're talking about here, but I don't think anyone is really sincerely saying that here. Comments have been made concerning metal being special in regards to its needs from gear, and there's some truth to it, but that doesn't mean metal "has better tone" or is...

Working with Stephen C from The Deftones this week, check out our progress!

Maybe it's your guitars. The SC guitars are (I imagine) fairly bright guitars. The guitar I was using with these is very bright itself (mostly maple, treble-heavy pickups), and the bass was quite heavy, but not quite overpowering.
  23. Tom

Working with Stephen C from The Deftones this week, check out our progress!

The low end is pretty huge, but it works. Based on what the PDF says, it looks like the IR is a Marshall 4x12 with G12K100s in it. It sounds much different from what I'm used to those speakers sounding like, though. The high end is really tame, that nasty 8k spike is gone, and the overall sound...

The time has come to have G2 AMP Modeling (TM) and MIMIC (TM) in the ULTRA/STANDARD ?

While it seems like the Ultra might have enough power to run a basic G2 single-amp single-cab patch, it's an officially discontinued item, and it doesn't make much sense for them to put the time into that kind of a firmware revision. It also doesn't make much business sense to give the Ultra the...

Working with Stephen C from The Deftones this week, check out our progress!

I haven't messed with these yet, but they seem really comprehensive! I'm definitely looking forward to sitting down with them later.
  26. Tom

    Why all the Metal??????

If I had to make a sincere guess, I'd say that it's because modelers have historically been much more popular with the metal crowd because they tend to work well for really high-gain and really low-gain tones (even if not well for much in between). Guitarists in general are coming around to...

Does your Axe FX have a pet name ?

I often call it a magic little black box, but that's more of a description than a name. I mostly call it my Axe-FX II. My computers, however, are named Doombox, Dethbox, and Frightbook.

    Axe FX II Ad!

Well now, that's pretty cool. It made me want to see a Batman version, but I'd imagine that would be pretty much like the real one, maybe with some yellow on it somewhere, and probably not actually that interesting to look at.

    A Perfect Circle Presets

If we can look at the Ultra patches, we can still get a pretty good idea of what's going on and make something close with the II. I heard he's using Friedman amps with a II for effects, but I'm not sure how reliable the source was.
  33. Tom

Which Audio Format Yields Highest Quality Playback?

I'd go with FLAC or WAV. ALAC is basically just a proprietary version of FLAC and isn't worth messing with unless you have some plans for the track that require it.

Trip-Tik does the heavy stuff quite well (just guitar content)

I like how it sounded for metal rhythm, too, though the bottom end in lower tunings doesn't hold up as well as other amp sims I'm used to (Uberschall, either Diezel, etc). It's really inspiring for leads, though. I'm not much of a lead player, but when I tried out the Triptik, I ended up...

    Triaxis/Axe Shootout

This. I like the first one better, but it sounds about like the same amp with different settings and effects. The main difference I'm hearing is that the first one sounds a little more scooped and smooth whereas the second one is more mid-heavy and a bit honky in comparison.
  37. Tom

    Aftermarket IRs

Most of that is true of finding what you want in a real cab, too, but impulse libraries are much smaller, cheaper, and easier to manage and work with when experimenting. I use Redwirez frequently, because they offer more options and flexibility for dialing in the sound with different mics and...

    Axe FX II Ad!

There's kind of a beautiful symmetry in making a digital model that's difficult to distinguish from a photo, of a piece of hardware that runs digital models of amps that are difficult to distinguish from real ones. Nicely done!

    Hand therapy video

Hey, those feel pretty good! I'm on the computer a lot, and while I'm not really near the point of carpal tunnel, my wrists and forearms do get a bit achey sometimes. I'll try doing those stretches regularly to see if it helps.

Working with Stephen C from The Deftones this week, check out our progress!

Actually, Bareknuckles have botique-type pickups to suit pretty much any style. They're kind of like Seymour Duncans, but nicer. I'll give you the Lundgrens, though. The M series is a one trick pony, but man, nothing else can pull off that trick quite as well. It might be my favorite pickup for...

    I recorded a meshuggah ripoff

Well, the way Meshuggah does it is that the guitars are 8s tuned down half a step (F-Bb-Eb-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb-Eb), and the bass is a 5 tuned to drop Bb (Bb-F-Bb-Eb-Ab) so that for their 7-string material in Bb, he can play an octave lower like normal, and for the 8-string stuff, he can play in unison.
  42. Tom

Working with Stephen C from The Deftones this week, check out our progress!

What, you mean Bareknuckles? Or DiMarzios? Or Seymour Duncans? Or those new Lace bars? Or do you mean that Axe-FX thing they love so much? I just think passives sound better pretty much across the board. I have EMGs in one guitar and a Blackout in another, and while I can get tones I like well...

What will be Fractal's next product?

I bet it's a gaming console to compete with Sony and Nintendo. Okay, maybe not. I actually like that idea! I doubt this will be it, especially as, last I heard, Cliff doesn't seem fond of the idea of developing plugins that could then be pirated, but studio gear modeled with the same detail as...

Any gamer's here Xbox One Or PS4?

I'll probably either get nothing or a PS4. I've never owned an Xbox of any description, just because they've never interested me, and the way they're shooting themselves in the foot with the Xbox One, that's probably not about to change. I'm mostly a PC gamer these days, though, so there's even...

Bass modeler through power full range speaker

I might be missing something here, but if you've already decided you're getting one for yourself, can't your bassist try that one? If it helps, I'm using an Alto TS115A with my Axe-FX II, and it works pretty well with my bass, though I haven't been able to crank it to see what kind of volume it...

    cheating???

In writing and making music, there is no such thing as cheating. Cheating at a performance is a different matter, but I don't think doing things like using a harmonizer to reproduce something you wouldn't be able to do live otherwise is cheating. Lip synching or relying on autotune entirely...

It's probable that you just didn't get along with the amp. Had you played the real version of whatever your favorite Axe-FX model is, you may have had a different experience. I understand what you mean about it affecting your playing, though. My ability to play is regrettably almost entirely...

Weird. Nolly's bass patch was the only one I liked.
  59. Tom

This is how close the Axe Fx II can get to a real EVH 5150III

I'm going to guess that the second one is the real amp. I feel like I can hear it pushing some air, where the first one sounds more "direct." They're incredibly close, though, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if I was wrong.

About IRs shooted with the TM block

I think the tone matching IR just serves as a graphic EQ with a LOT of bands. Depending on the complexity of the resulting curve, you could probably approximate it with a graphic or parametric EQ block, but there's a good chance it won't sound right. Try it, though! You might be able to get what...

Multiband Compressor - tightening the low end in high gain rhythm gtrs

I usually set the bottom frequency at around 120hz or so, leave the ratio at 2 or so, lower the threshold until I see the bar moving when I palm mute, and fine tune until it sounds right. Then I set the ratios for the middle and high bands to 1 so they are in effect bypassed. There's just not...

two guitars: one axe, one not. random question about live use

Plenty of big name acts have little or no visible backline. It's not a big deal. What about the bassist's rig, though? Putting that on your side would offer some symmetry. Where do you get dummy heads and cabs, anyway?
  71. Tom

May we please have your input on trim / handle preferences ?

Of course I'd see this a few days after giving up on a guitar cab form factor and getting a wedge. Heh. +1 for white piping (or none) and side handles.

AxeFX II + BB Sonic Maximiser

I used to use a 482i. It did seem to add something (other than EQ) to my POD X3. I'm not sure just how much of a benefit it actually is, but the reason they tend to sound like crap is that most people turn the knobs up too high. My other guitarist at the time would run his knobs at noon or...

    Favorite drive pedals for bass?

If you mean real pedals, I'm a big fan of the Tech 21 Bass Driver. As for Axe-FX pedals, the Rat gives me more or less what I'm looking for. In either case, be sure to have it blended in (I usually have it at 40%-50%) to let the clean signal through to the amp (or amp block) to retain clarity...

    Question for the Metal guys

I don't know about the others, but Meshuggah hasn't had a cab on their stage in years. The word is their Axe-FX tone is the best tone they've ever had. In any case, I don't see why FRFR wouldn't work as well for metal as it would for anything else.
