Couldn't hear the backline?

I seem to be the only one NOT wanting my guitar in the regular monitor when I'm using a monitor or cab myself... To me hearing my signal from multiple sources makes it diffuse and more difficult to hear clearly.

I have an M-Series Valley Arts Strat. Bought it 1988 in Cologne at "Valley Arts Germany". AFAIK these were japanese parts put together in Germany under the name "Valley Arts". They cost roughly half of the US-models. Mine is 7/8 size.

Ok, I was fooled by the gain (thinking the amp and Axe would clean up the most), after listening through my studio monitors (0300Ds) I can't hear a difference between 1 and 2, so the accuracy aspect is perfect. They both sound great, too. 3 still sounds good to me (despite having less gain), but...

Modeling Microphones? Antelope? Townsend Labs? Slate?

I have a Slate and the Townsend. I've used the Slate for 3 years and I still like it. I mostly use it without the software emulations (although they are very similar to the original mics I know - U47 e.g.). As a ProTools HDX user I can't use the Slate plugin while recording, so that's a caveat...

Gibson Standard vs Gibson R8 vs Gibson R9

Playingwise you seemed most „at home“ on the Slash and the sound difference is negligible if there is one at all. I don’t like its looks (I like the R9), but if YOU like it the Slash seems the way to go.

The Dynacord sounds a little bit more „narrow“, but not much. I prefer the CLR but wouldn’t hesitate to use the Dynacord if I had to (I still have both).

Here's my old comparison between the RCF and the FBT (without EQ), the direct signal and the FBT with EQ. Wedges miked AFAIR with a ECM8000 about 1m away center. I seem to be not able to share the playlist, so go in there and you'll find three files...

The Verve is "coloring". I was the one that did the corrective EQ IR. It was unusable without it. The CLR is as flat as it probably gets, Dynacord 2nd, RCF 3rd. (from those I personally know).

Free field mode on the CLR is not really meant to be used (only) in a free field but anytime you raise the speaker from the ground (like on a stand or on a case).

Same here (that was when I still used a RCF NX12SMA). The soundguy said my guitar sounds way better through my RCF than through his (crappy) PA (both fed DI), so he wanted to mike my RCF...

I had a Laney, liked it (especially for its price) but my CLR's are in another league. If you don't like the CLR stay with traditional cabs.

Big Flange sound

Interestingly I had no problem getting a great effect flange sound (like Barracuda) in the Ultra, the II and the AX8 were much harder to get sounding right, the III is in between.

I find the Dynacord to be a step up from the RCF. Sounds a bit better (more similar to the CLR), lighter, more options, broader dispersion, cheaper...

My CLR Neo MkIIs are freaking loud if I want to. Have you put the channel volume on the CLR up like described in the manual and use the Output/ Master for volume? Have you tried both inputs and the different placement modes? Sub switch off? Cable tested?

Xitone 12” active wedge or Atomic CLR for FRFR wedge

I had a FRFR cab that was said to be FRFR "but not as harsh as most PA wedges". It even won some shootouts in guitar mags. It wasn't FRFR, it was boomy and the treble was warm but not clear and down a few db from 3kHz up. Sounds didn't translate to any PA. Sold it. Bought two CLRs, perfect...

I played all Firebird X's that were at the Gibson booth when it was introduced at Frankfurt Messe a good 10 years ago. Everyone of them was awful, the worst piece of junk I've ever had in my hands. But thrash them??

I tried two on top of each other. Didn't work for me as the wide dispersion leads to interference (comb filtering) and destroys the otherwise perfect sound. IMO they have to be spaced/angled accordingly.

How I finally got great tone from the Axe-Fx III at gig volumes - RTFM

I'm not sure why the hipass on the tops would lessen the mids (as it should affect bass response to max. 150Hz IMO and if at all strengthen the mids and clear them up a bit), but I've had my exprerience with FBT, so everything is possible... ;-) A 12" sub with a 12" top is an interesting...

You might want to see it the other way round: the monitor would normally cost 6k, but the stand is optional for those who'd use the VESA anyway, so they SAVE 1k. It seems from the specs the monitor competes with 40k competitors, so I'd calm down a bit...

AFAIK HP, Dell etc. machines with similar specs are at least the same money. And the display competes with reference gear many times its cost. It's not prosumer gear but pro - aimed mainly at hires video editing and rendering. Audio pros don't need the full blast, a 12-core and 96GB RAM should...

I have/ had a lot of FRFRs (sans the Friedmans), the CLR is the winner for me. Putting it up some (on a pole e.g.) and switching it to free field is absolutely killer (the developer himself recommends that positioning).

The Dynacord is 90 degrees... As I now also own a CLR (also 90 degrees) I can directly compare them and the CLR wins for me soundwise by a little bit. The feature set of the Dynacord is better though.

A friend brought a mono Gemini to my studio to check it out. It had a little hum all the time (more so when BT was on) and sounded very brittle. I think it was broken (though new)... Sorry, can't help you with the mono/stereo version comparison.

1&2 are the same take (at least the same recorded take) and sound more present. The other 3 are the same alternate take and a bit more muffled in comparison. Not a difference that couldn't easily be eq'd. The sound character is almost identical otherwise IMO.

Inexpensive active FRFRs: Headrush1212, Laney LFR112, QSC CP8, ISP FS8...

Kind of. That's not really a fair comparison, but the Laney holds up pretty well. It's a bit more bass heavy and has a slight dip in the mids. It may "feel" more like a guitar cab for some. I just sold my Laney because I could get the CLR for a good price, otherwise I would have kept it.

There are two venues around here where the only "solution" is rotating the guitar 90 degrees. Both venues have old and bad wiring on their ceilings. Even humbuckers and EMGs hum like hell.
