Best poweramp for Axe III (Goal: LOUDDDDD)

I got an LXII recently, and was expecting great things, compared to my Matrix GT1000FX. Although the LXII is superb, what I found was just how good the Matrix really is. There's not a lot between them at all. I will continue to use both, but the Matrix will get the most use overall due to its...

Axe-Fx III Firmware 25.00 Public Beta (Cygnus X-3)

I’ve left all my 100 or so presets as they were, due to the fact that even a soft reset would wipe a lot of settings out, such as GEQ settings, IC settings etc. What I’ve found is everything sounds just fine or even better than before with the old settings, so I can just get on with the business...

Best poweramp for Axe III (Goal: LOUDDDDD)

The LXII is a great pairing because it's so transparent, especially compared to other valve amps. It's built like a tank, which is great, but it's very heavy. Also those who whinge about excessive fan noise won't like it a lot. The internal fans are loud, and that's understandable, they're...

The importance of Mono for live guitar playing

Yes, I no longer ever use the enhancer either. I'm finding it's punchier sounding enough without it. I unashamedly run OUT 1 Stereo to FOH and OUT 2 Stereo to a power amp & a Stereo cab, and will continue to do so, as I'm the only guitar player in my band, and we run our own FOH.
  7. craiguitar

The importance of Mono for live guitar playing

Same here, it works great, I have a stereo cab on stage, and a separate stereo feed to FOH, panned hard L/R. Sounds huge. All the internet troll talk of it not working or phase issues, or not being any good if you’re not stood slap bang in the centre of the stereo field, well that’s all total...

Best poweramp for Axe III (Goal: LOUDDDDD)

I have an LXII and a Matrix GT1000FX. Sound-wise I genuinely can’t tell the difference between the two. They are both very neutral sounding, which is kind of the whole point. I can’t fault either amp. 👍

    Legacy Vs. Dyna-Cabs

Legacy for me. I only use one cab IR across all of my presets, and it's one I shot of my own 4x12. Obviously that wouldn't be possible with Dynacabs. I'm using the IR through FOH/Monitors, and using a power amp and my real cab for stage.

    New stage trends...

Probably also due to the fact that there are hardly any bands anymore, certainly in the mainstream anyway. Most live acts are pop/EDM, and the stage would more likely consist of 'dancers' if anything.

I use the Brit Silver model across many of my presets, and it’s one of my go-to models. So this one is intriguing. One thing I needed to do here was increase the amp level on all those presets. Once done, it’s sounding great (not that it didn’t previously). I Wonder what the sauce is here.…

I’m never using a 3rd party IR ever again. Ever. For anything.

I've tried Dynacabs multiple times, with a sort of 'assumption' that I'll gain some magic improvement, alas just can't get on with them. I understand this predicament, albeit not a major thing, it's more a case of looking for the proper approach for your setup, and that may involve some compromise. I use 'Output 1' to FOH and 'Output 2' to Neutral SS Power amp and real guitar cabinet. What I currently do with the Impedance...

Any tips on how to match the IR curve to the cabinet? Other than picking a curve that is from a similarly configured cabinet (i.e. 4x12 with v30’s), and also trying to find the LF resonance of the real cab, I’d be unsure what other measures to take.

I recently upgraded from a Mk1 to a Turbo, and I thought the price was a bit steep, but if i'd waited 1 month longer to do that, it would have cost me another £300!. It's not likely to get any better any time soon, so if you're going to buy, do it now!

Axe-Fx III sounds thin, tinny, and anemic -- Power Amp?

Yes, and obviously setting the presets to work with the cabinet properly (impedance curve). if the Axe doesn’t know what cabinet it’s ‘talking’ to, then of course it’s going to sound flat and anaemic. You need to make it wake up and that’s important.
  83. craiguitar

Axe-Fx III sounds thin, tinny, and anemic -- Power Amp?

Me too, always stereo, and never ever had a single issue of any kind. It always just sounds incredible, not only to me but the sound guy, and anyone in the FOH area that is remotely clued up enough to notice. I guess it’s just how well you set up your presets that counts for a lot.

    Axe-Fx III 16.00 Beta 10 "Cygnus" Firmware - Public Beta #7

Yeah it’s going to be a long wait. The only upside right now, I’m able to freely mess around with the beta, I keep it loaded up without having to cycle back for gigs etc. Here in the UK, 36% of the population have had at least one dose of vaccine, so that’s pretty decent, as in mainland Europe...

Really? That seems unfathomable/hard to imagine. we are in full lockdown here still, (UK), and there’s the threat of a third wave heading over from mainland Europe. It’s looking increasingly bleak at this point. Needless to say, the gig diary is well and truly empty.

What is this ‘gigging’ of which you speak? Not seen the likes of it for a year now... #lockdown. 😩
