New Axe-Fx III vs used Axe-Fx II?

I had crazy good tones on the original Ultra as well. I did notice an improvement going to the 2XL in the sound of distorted palm mutes, but no complaints on the Ultra. I did half of my album with it and those songs sound spectacular tone-wise.

New Axe-Fx III vs used Axe-Fx II?

The 2 is obsolete? That's pretty funny. That's like saying a Marshall stack, a Fender reverb, a Mesa Bookie Mark 4 and many other amps are obsolete. You guys are ridiculous. Had my 2XL for 6 years. No plans to upgrade (if the 3 was 2RU's high I'd consider it), no regrets as far as tones as all...

Can AxeFx 2XL patches be shared with AxeFX 2 users (non-XL)?

Thanks for the replies! I'm trying to download Fractool but the link on this page is dead: https://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/fractool-ultimate-multitool-for-fas-devices.112538/ That link for Windows in the OP I saw is this: http://archive.axefx.fr/Tools/FracTool.exe So.....where does one...

    Axe-FX II DAW plugin?

Agreed. Personally, I record all guitar tracks with my Thermionic plugins on the bus. Then when it's time for mixdown, I re-amp through the Axe-Fx, but it's not with me for the actual recording process. Too much to lug around with my mobile setup.
  7. jerotas

    The Character knob is AWESOME

That would depend on a ton of variables what material your pick is made out of and how sharp the edge is. Really if you want to decrease the pick sound just pick softer and usually legato whenever possible.
  8. jerotas

When re-amping guitar tracks through USB, not possible to hear in context of mix, correct?

Right, I did this already, and found out that I need to run ASIO4ALL so I can hear the full mix in context with the re-amp. I can plug my headphones into my onboard sound card to hear the mix. Thanks.
  9. jerotas

When re-amping guitar tracks through USB, not possible to hear in context of mix, correct?

I have the Axe 2, as I said above. There's only a single input change field, not per input.
  10. jerotas

When re-amping guitar tracks through USB, not possible to hear in context of mix, correct?

How do you set input1 only to USB? You have your headphones or speakers (to hear the whole mix) plugged into the AxeFx or where?
  11. jerotas

When re-amping guitar tracks through USB, not possible to hear in context of mix, correct?

The onboard computer audio card is a crappy SoundBlaster (I consider any built-in sound card crappy by the way - those are ok for watching movies or playing games but not recording). Also, since I'm running in ASIO because that gives no noticeable latency, any other sound cards you use as the...
  12. jerotas

When re-amping guitar tracks through USB, not possible to hear in context of mix, correct?

You can send through an output and monitor/record on any track's input. But you need a separate output (and therefore a different interface as well) to hear the full mix, since there's only one output for the Axe-FX interface.
  13. jerotas

When re-amping guitar tracks through USB, not possible to hear in context of mix, correct?

Yeah I have the 2 XL+. That explains it then! Thanks, I'll try with both interfaces next, because my normal interface doesn't have any SPDIF or AES.
  14. jerotas

When re-amping guitar tracks through USB, not possible to hear in context of mix, correct?

I am reading that there are 8 ins and 8 outs on the built-in interface through USB, however the only output that shows up in Sonar (running in ASIO mode) is FAS USB Audio ASIO Driver OUT 1. And yeah there's 2 stereo inputs that give you L/R or both, each. If I don't change "Main Input Source"...

    Axe-Fx II Firmware 17.04 Released

I don't think you fully understood my post. I can restore the presets I made and backed up, no problem. I want to get the *factory presets* back. When I "restore" those, I get 384 slots of "empty". Thanks for the reply.

    Axe-Fx II Firmware 17.04 Released

I've been having a problem with Axe-Edit copying large groups of my presets to other banks. No idea when this is happening, but I never go past preset #45, and I see multiple copies of everything I made in the lower 45, showing up above that. Whatever. Not particularly worried about that bug...

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Thank you everyone. I would prefer that this thread ends at this point. I have plenty of workarounds and things to try. Although it is rather strange that real drive pedals are basically unusable on input 1, but maybe that's expected. I have no idea.
  22. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Yeah for a bunch of pages there I was not giving an inch. So you're partly right about my attitude. No harm done. No one has commented on laughyeraxoff's findings on using a real drive pedal into input 1 though.

Thanks, I have a Herbert patch that is pretty good too. I'll check it out.
  24. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I use my volume knob for gate. That sounds good that the drive volume only needs to come down a little :)
  25. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I double track all my rhythms as well. One panned hard left and one hard right. I also used to use way too much treble, back in 2002. The recordings make me cringe. I recently tried a gain patch with about 30% less gain. I liked it for a day. Then a few days later I went back and listened to it...
  26. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I think you haven't read anything on page 8 of the thread. I'm starting to come around and said I'd mess with the drive block for instance. More recently, I'm mainly only pissed off that I was able to use the device this way on the Ultra, but not on the 2. With what you quoted me on, I would...
  27. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

That's my guess as well. Only Cliff would know for sure but he didn't want to explain what the unfixable problem is. He only wanted to post to say my patch is unplayable (my recording proves otherwise).
  28. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I think they're the best pickups ever, but that's subjective. I have the Iron Man set in my other guitar and those are just as great in a different way!
  29. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I use the Bogners too. They sound great and have plenty of gain. Jim doesn't wax pot because it robs tone. But he uses an alternative method. They are potted.
  30. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

They are potted. Did you read my whole post that you quoted? I tried 3 other random guitars at the store and they all had the same problem. 4 out of 4 other users that tried the patch on this thread verified as well. We're past this part. The problem exists and it happens to all passive pickup...
  31. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I haven't seen a chart of their response. They aren't crazy treble like "Screamin Demons" though, I can tell you that much. First thing I'm going to try is less volume and high cut on the drive block until just shy of the point where I think it doesn't sound good.
  32. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Oh ok, I thought it was like a high pass where nothing gets through at all.
  33. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Yes. When recording I've had to bump down the Master fader in my DAW somewhat when monitoring the signal when at 50%. There may be some input gain I can add in the MOTU control panel, I'll take a look. Pickups are some of the best pickups on the planet. This set here. His company wins pickup...

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I re-read it again, maybe you're right. I apologize if so. I took the "as you were" part to mean something else possibly.
  35. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

True with the hamburgers haha. The drive high pass / low pass filter thing is probably more theoretically distressing than it is aurally distressing. Putting high pass to 1500, I'm really saying "no, awesome pickup. You're actually not hearing anything above 1500 Hz". Which seems like a total...
  36. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

That's a possible workaround. This more annoys me than is unworkable.
  37. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

All right, I'll give it a try next time I have a bit of time.
  38. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

We have different ears I suppose. I can hear the attack of each note on my patches. Maybe not so much as if I used less gain. But actually I like legato playing better most time - it's less percussive and smoother. So maybe I want less attack and transient? It sounds good to me.
  39. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Funny, never happens to me. Even with my "unplayable" tone. In fact, just the opposite. I wasn't helpful? Ok, next time I find a potential bug, I'll keep it to myself and there will be no possibility of it getting fixed.
  40. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Hi Yek, I remember you from wayyyy back. Cool to see you on here. I have tried previously changing the high cut, when making my new Axe2 patches. It made me lose some definition, which I didn't like. I could get most of the definition back by adding high EQ after the amp as you said, but it...
  41. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I definitely agree with "more dynamics" in the Axe2. In fact I think there's just more definition in the lead tones overall compared to the Ultra. Doing lightly palm muted sweep arpeggios for instance sound way more clear than the Ultra. I tried making a recording of the same riff using front...
  42. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Sorry for offending, I was offended based on the below and was being honest. Maybe there are better words I should have used. I'm thinking you have a different definition of the word if you used it describing my patch. I hate hate hate muddy guitar. I do everything to avoid it. And in my eyes...
  43. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

That's just it. Pretty sure the Ultra didn't have this particular limit. Sucks that it showed up in the successor to the product line.
  44. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I don't know why that would be the whole point. But I'm a different animal than most. I don't like most tube amps I've played. I've never owned one or wanted to own one. I've always been using digital preamps since 1990 when I started playing. It's the flexibility that I value most. That and...
  45. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Love Iron Maiden! But they don't use enough gain for my tastes. I really dislike grainy sounds that occur with less gain (such as AC / DC). If that's the most gain an amp could provide, I probably wouldn't be a guitarist. Yes Maiden has more than them, but not enough for a gainiac like me. Ha...
  46. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Yeah I don't use the gate, but I'll turn the radio down to 1/1 so it does nothing. I'll mess around and see what it sounds like with less volume on the drive pedal. Not sure how much volume has to be removed there to eliminate the squeal or what it sounds like without it. I may just use the rear...
  47. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

It's not "a patch". I have like 15 lead / rhythm patches and they ALL have this problem on the 2XL. I like the way the TS alters the tone of the amp (more gain), so I'm not changing it. It's not "the same settings as the Ultra" of course. But it sounds similar. I'm not clipping input or output...
  48. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Don't care about the real amps scenario. No need to talk about that any more. I've been using presets just like this for 5 years (4.5 with the Ultra). It didn't happen on the Ultra at all, ever, with roughly equal settings. I'm now thinking about getting that Ultra back. Or I'll just bypass the...

  50. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

You're exaggerating. Ludicrous amount of gain? Opinion only. Unplayable? A false fact. Not even close. I play intricate rhythms at live gigs with it. Would you like me to post a video of me playing MegaDeth or Joe Satriani stuff with it, sounding great with no noise (I'll use my active pickup...
  51. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I think you said something about unity gain maybe causing it (hardware not software). But the thing is I don't really have to have output 1 on 100%. It can be anywhere from ~55 - 100% and the squealing still happens the same. Yet the volume does get louder as I turn it from 55 to 100. So I think...
  52. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Of course, or I get no sound at all. Turned the speaker on for the test since I've never used rear input on the 2XL before.
  53. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Just thought of one more thing to try. Plugged into the rear input instead with the same settings. NO SQUEAL!! So my conclusion is that this is a software bug or side effect having to do with the "special sauce" on the front input.
  54. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I adjusted attack, threshold etc. Didn't get it to working without hearing a really fast instant of squeal.
  55. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Yeah good point, it could be a "hardware bug" haha.
  56. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I know man. Thanks for thinking about it. This *is* an actual problem with all units (post Ultra) that I've found. I've eliminated all variables. Whether anything will be done to address it is yet to be seen.
  57. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Yes I tried another cable. 2 others. I don't know why you're asking this though, because 3 out of 3 other people that tried my patch reproduced my problem exactly. It's not MY problem, it's a problem with the Axe-Fx in one way or another. Everyone can reproduce it if they want to with passive...
  58. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

To be clear, I'm boosting the entire frequency range. I'm not "boosting the high". I don't like to narrow the frequency range of my expensive awesome pickups so I always leave the high pass and low pass at "non-existent" on drive blocks, and I'm not going to change that. I'll try your level...
  59. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Here's the final response from Fractal Audio support: ---START---- It is not made to use with the outputs cranked that high. You can do it but it is not recommended. Think of it like the gas pedal in your car, while you can drive your vehicle with the throttle wide open, it is not recommended...

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Thanks for testing. I knew it would happen on other devices, not just mine. What does Mark 1 mean?
  61. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Already tried, 10 feet away. No difference. I had the same patch construction on the Ultra and it didn't squeal at all. I don't have the Ultra any more though.
  62. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I think you missed the part where I reported trying with a couple other guitars. They all had the same problem. Active pickup guitars are immune though.
  63. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Here's my squeal patch. All you need to do to reproduce: 1) Import patch to Axe-Fx 2XL. 2) Plug in guitar with passive pickups to front input 1. 3) Turn up volume and tone knobs on guitar to full. Select bridge pickup (happens on all my humbuckers though). 4) Turn OUPUT1 knob to 100% on Axe-Fx...

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I'm not taking the guitar apart.
  66. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I didn't use pre-eq. I didn't boost high frequencies purposely, but someone said the drive pedal I used does boost them as a side effect. This problem never happened on my Ultra with the same setup by the way.

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

laughyouraxeoff has exactly the same problem. I spoke with him on the phone. Is it normal with a real amp? I don't know, I tried a real amp, not with a drive pedal, but I'm not going to turn the amp up to 11 and see if it happens. That would be more a feedback problem of massive speaker volume...
  69. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Ok, I took my Axe-Fx and guitar down to Guitar Center to do more testing. Definitely an Axe-Fx bug (or mine is faulty)! I tried: 1) Plugging 2 other random (A Hamer and an LTD) non-active pickup guitars into my Axe-Fx with output1 volume at 100%. Still got the squealing. Even with speaker not...
  73. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I forgot about that! Yes actually I don't even need a speaker to cause the squealing apparently. I see the output levels remain at the same volume when I stop playing, which is sqeal. As soon as I turn the output down enough, or turn off the guitar's volume, it doesn't happen any more. So it's...
  74. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I didn't try it because to figure out what's going on, I want to be using the least amount of pieces. To find out if it happened without the speaker on, I'd have to insert a recording device into the equation. Nothing else to prove it otherwise.
  75. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Yeah I tried another cable. No change. Another amp? I could try that at the store I guess.
  76. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Nope. 1 foot away, 12 feet away, no difference. Even at almost silent levels. Squealing like mad.
  77. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Rolling back volume or tone gets rid of the squeal. If doesn't "change" it just stops at a certain point.
  78. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Nothing I'm sure. But I didn't want to put an interface into the equation (like a MOTU). This is the most stripped down findings I could do.
  79. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Final report, can't think of anything else to try. My patch output volume is about 3-4dB below what would clip the outputs, by the way. If I turn the output1 volume past half (12 o'clock) it starts squealing when I'm not playing. Only with the Ibanez guitar, not with the McNaught. This is just...
  80. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I have the MOTU Traveler. All the inputs are XLR/1/4" jacks. I'm using the 1/4" part.
  81. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Well I know I'm not clipping the inputs on the MOTU (it has LED meters), but not sure about running direct into the monitors (there's no clip LED). I still get the squealing when running through the MOTU though. I'll test if the squealing happens with the monitors turned off and output on 100%.
  82. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

In that case how do I verify? Record "not playing", then turn the speakers back on and listen?
  83. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

No, I had them unplugged the entire time except when I tested them alone.
  84. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Yes it does lol. It also goes away if I roll down the tone knob to half (sounds terrible though).
  85. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Ok thanks to Jezza's prompting, I eliminated one variable when I started to think outside the box. The difference between my gig monitors and studio monitors was because I CRANK output1 which goes to my computer / studio monitors, but output2 going to my gigging monitor was on maybe 40%. When I...
  87. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Yes I always have a boost of the TS-808 with the volume all the way up and no gain. And that's the way I like the sound. I mean I can test it without it but even if it doesn't squeal I don't think that's an acceptable option for me.
  88. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Actually I get the squeals even if the speakers are turned all the way down (can see it on the LED meter on the MOTU and hear it ever so faintly), and even if I walk all the way across the room with the guitar (about 10 feet away from speakers) and even if I do both. I have no idea what to do. I...
  89. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Well I held all the strings behind the net while it was squealing and before it squealed and it didn't stop it. Is there a better way to test that? It sounds the same on either pickup aside from the "pickup EQ difference". Recording here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/40293802/sqeal.mp3...
  90. jerotas

I get feedback when I stop playing on some of my rhythm patches???

Ok. It comes in instantly, and is quite high pitched, higher than 2.3 fret harmonic on G string. Moving the whammy bar does not affect the pitch. Now that we think it's microphonic, how is such a thing fixed? Nickel covered? No idea. It looks like a standard Seymour Duncan pickup with the 6...

Update on the situation. I looked and both springs on the trem are coated and didn't have the coating scraped off at all. So I took care of that on both ends of both strings. No improvement in feedback. Strangely, I can play on my gigging powered monitor with no feedback problems at all. But the...

Right on, will try. I tried using all coated springs and scraping off the end, but it didn't behave as expected so I left one uncoated spring and that worked.
