    I've had at least some success two ways, 1) using a gate with slow attack and medium ratio, and 2) using a volume block, controlled by an envelope with a slow attack.

    I've been using that trick with an expression pedal -- assigning the same pedal to amp drive and level, then adjusting the slopes so that the level backs off as gain increases. Easy access to a wide range of gains within one patch.
