Any Standard users wish they would have gotten the Ultra

Standard is fine for me and I use a LOT of effects. Only concern is a lot of effects with dual amp, but personally I don't use dual amp setups.

The Axe fx vs guitar rig

Get an Axe :x :x :x :lol: , it's the last piece of (non-wood based) hardware you'll need to get your tones. The Axe ACTUALLY sounds like the amps it models as opposed to PODs, guitar rig, amplitube and ampfarm etc which sound like lifeless approximations.

Really loud delay spill when switching presets- how to fix?

FRFR users: What do you take to the gig?

12ma gain vs. Axe output vol.

Because of the lack of level meter ont he 12ma input, I can never tell if the Axe is clipping the input of the Verve.

Live sound > Recording sound

I've found tones that sound good at bedroom level sound bassy and and harsh at live level. This is due to the way the ear works, I have to roll off quite a lot of highs and lows to get the bedroom tones to sound good.

Is it worth swapping QSCs for FBTs??

The 12ma is designed to be placed on the floor, it's a monitor, there are separate bass and treble controls too if it gets a bit boomy. I've never owned a qsc so can't comment on the comparative sounds.

The vintage recabinets are useless as far as I'm concerned, he ran the test tone through the full amp section (tubes and all) of the amp, not just the speakers.

This might sound stupid but have you installed the midisport drivers from the m-audio website? If not Windows loas it's generic MIDI driver which won't work.

Well, here's the frequency response graph, I suppose you could get a very rough approximation. You'd need lots of time and a 512 channel EQ (Are the mic IRs 512 samples?).

Axe-FX Ultra review in this month's "Sound on Sound"

Just bought the PDF review for 99P, pretty poor. He gives about two sentences to the amp models and rest to the look (!) of the unit and the user interface. He strikes me as a man who wouldn't know an authentic guitar tone if it kicked him in the ass or has had barely any time with the unit.

The Axe digital out is at 48kHz, so if want to record at that sample rate then it's fine, anything higher, you'll need to go analog.

OK seriously, as bad as Peaveys are, they should not sound like pure shit, they are PA speakers, sure they're not great but you shouldn't be hearing just proco RAT style fizz into a speaker. Something, somewhere in your chain is wrong. Only you my friend, with all the help on this topic...

Stupid noob query--FRFR vs. Home Stereo

OK forgetting frequency response, monitors are far more robust than stereo speakers, they have limiters to stop being driven too hard. Stereo speakers are designed to play compressed, mastered material. They simply were not designed for the high dynamic range output of a guitar.

The difference between a padded-preamped signal and a line level signal to my ears is night and day on most equipment I've tried. Sorry but that's my experience. When you say padding will avoid problems I assume you mean clipping? Well yeah obviously that's better than overloading the preamp...

The xlrs are at line level on the axe output, padding it down to mic level for the micpres on the board, then preamping it back up is going to colour the sound. If the board has any line level inputs, use them.

:shock: Don't do that, use the line ins. You are padding the axe down to mic level then boosting it again with Behringer mic-pres, that's going to sound bad in anyones books.

If you're going into the XLR preamps you are literally destroying your sound, USE THE LINE IN 1/4" JACKS ON YOUR MIXER. I can't stress that enough. In fact I'll say it again. USE THE LINE IN 1/4" JACKS ON YOUR MIXER, NOT THE XLR MIC-PRES.

Consumer Reports says 15% of general consumer electronics fail after 3-4 years, with laptops having a 41% failure rate and desktops 30%. I would wager the axe failure rate is considerably lower than this.

Well, as the guys have said there is no way adjusting the master fader will affect the drive of any amp/cab blocks. That is very strange, I can only think something post-master fader is very sensitive to the volume changes, but you say you've turned the output knob up and the distortion isn't...

It rocked. :D :D :D The engineer was amazed with me just handing him an XLR, he was also Italian and loved my FBT. I can't describe how good the FBT sounded. Fat, rounded, loud, awesome. GCP + Axe + 12MA = Heaven.....

Amp sim drive question

Wait a minute here, it was my understanding that setting the master volume level to 9.00 emulates the real preamp section. EG for the AC30 sim, set the master to 9.00 and the drive block acts like the actual channel knob on the amp. Where the hell did 4.00 come from!??!?!?!!?

You don't need a stereo input, you can ping-pong the delays of a mono input. You can obviously pan a mono delay block as well.

I think Brian may stripped out all preamp tubes apart from the normal channel to make it run cooler, I'm not sure about the GZ34? I've got a mullard loaded AC30 (Korg re-issue) and it sounds okay, but to be honest, the celestion blues take years to soften up and you can't get the tone without...

Questions from a potential Axe buyer

I'm a massive fx junkie and the Standard is fine with me, I can run two amps and cabs no problem with multiple effect/eq blocks. If I do run into CPU problems I just remove any unused fx blocks. I've never not been able to get a patch I want due to CPU limits.

Dude, if it makes you feel any better I'm selling my Mullard loaded Voc AC30 TBX to fund the FBT. Also, I don't care if I'm monitoring in mono, but you can still send the stereo feed out to FOH. Best of both worlds! :D I'll post a review on Sunday when I can use it for the first time.

No probs, To bypass an effect/amp/cab block whilst editing it again just hit the bypass button, you'll then see the words "Bypassed" in the top left of the display.

In my humble opinion you will hear a more accurate representation of you FOH sound with a FRFR monitoring setup than with a mic'd cab. When using a cab what you hear on stage is not the mic'd cab but the real cab, therefore it's not what people out front are hearing. You CAN get a good...

I have an AC30, I don't remember ever really being able to crank it to any decent volume live and I've played some pretty big venues. I usually have a sound engineer moan if it goes past 1/4 level.

Before you do anything make sure your not putting the line level out of the Axe into a mic pre on your interface. This is an immediate tone killer. Always try to use a line-in on your interface if you have one.

getting an axe-fx AGAIN

I felt this way long before the Axe-FX but to be a top sounding guitar player these days you almost have to be a physicist. Just understanding the physics of sound helps so much when creating sounds. You can throw an electronics degree in there as well.

Mid-Size solution - FBT Verve 8ma

Hey Scott, good luck with the gig and please let us know how it goes with the 8MA. I REALLY need a FRFR solution for a gig on the 16th and can't decide whether a 8MA or 12MA is needed (I could really do with the weight/space saving of the 8MA).

AC30 to be to JMI standards?

It should be noted Edge attributes his '64 vox sound to the fact his Bulldog speakers are worn out which gives them a softer tone. The amp has caught fire a few times so it certainly not JMI-era components anymore!

Weird Stuff !

To see what firmware you're on, click the utility button then scroll to the right using the page right button. The last tab tells you what firmware you're on. "Bad checksum" only flashes up briefly when the firmware has finished uploading.

Am I To Believe That the GCP Will Not Display Patch Names?

No, there's no dynamic interaction back to the GCP from the POD. The GCP just has a pre-defined list of amp models that are on the POD. Kind of like a glorified IA setup. You certainly can't get tuner or patch info. I wish more than anyone that the GCP could receive MIDI from the Axe. Can't...

To be fair the GCP is five years old so wasn't built in anticipation of a modeller sending it patch names. I have one and programming patch names is easy. Saying that, I WANT THE FRACTAL MFC!!!

Looks like you got a "bad checksum" error. Try uploading using a different midi librarian, or slow down the transfer rate in the one you are using. I've been getting the "bad checksum" on my midisport trying to upload the newest firmware using the same settings as last time. Just the nature...
