    High-shielded cables and EMI noise

Ultimately you can't shield against EMI everywhere, because the 'M' means magnetic - if you shield the pickups from magnetic fields, you won't get any string signal.

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 10.00 Public Beta #2

Measure the voltage swing in both types of amp. It's not very different. In the Marshall, it's got a single triode stage in front of it; in the TW/Komet, it's got two, but it's also got the tone stack in-between, which drops a fair amount of signal. Further, if it was done for the reason you...

    Axe-Fx III Firmware 10.00 Public Beta #2

It's a simple clipping circuit, copied from the Marshall 2203/2204. It's biased super cold, so the positive swing amplifies (although the AF is pretty low), but the negative swing drives into cutoff - the effect is not unlike a single-stage diode clipper.

    Ground Hum and Noise

Shielding probably won't do much. Since the 'M' in EMI is "Magnetic", effective shielding against it would also block the string signal. I love P90s, but they're unfortunately one of the 'noisiest' pickups since the coil has so much surface area. If I had a situation where I needed to somehow...

    Ground Hum and Noise

I've seen plugs in old houses - especially houses that were not originally 'electric', or were post-and-tube - where the 'hot' runs are totally separate from neutral/ground and could come from a completely different part of the house. The only times I've seen this in the Age of Romex is like I...

    Ground Hum and Noise

Back to what I originally wrote - if you have noise when you have ONLY a guitar/bass (which is properly wired, natch) plugged directly into the Axe with a (properly wired/shielded) cable, AND you're listening with headphones plugged directly into the Axe...then you have an environmental issue...

Anyone know the frequency curve of a guitar's tone control?

That'll almost impossible to do without some sophisticated equipment. If you know the value of the tone pot and cap, you can create a plot of the control itself pretty easily. But the impedance of the pickup also affects the circuit, and not only is that an unknown, it's frequency-dependent.

    Remove cathode bypass cap?

That's power amp. Cathode bypass (unless we're talking about cathode-bias power tubes bypass cap, which I've never really ever seen omitted) is a preamp thing.

Humbuster Cable to balanced TRS Mixer Inputs

I had a similar problem, albeit with a FAR less complex setup. My signal comes out of a Relay G90 (using all three outputs) and goes to an Axe II, and Axe III, and a Helix Rack. Outputs from those - all XLR, ground-lifted - go to a Focusrite 18i20. I would get the noise (the whining) you...

    Axe-Fx III Firmware Version 2.05

I never 'got' the Model T - it's a Marshall preamp on an ultralinear power amp, more or less like that of the 135W Twin/Showman Reverbs. I'd much rather have a 200S or 2000S. But before all that, an Ampeg V4.

On the topic of Dumbles, it's interesting to me how the ODS is (IMO, obviously) seemly almost certainly responsible for the direction the Mesa Mark series took. So, the Dumble thing...

And, in the comments: Tim Pierce Guitar 1 year ago +Dave Lanciani I use volume pedals in different places in the chain, but the one I'm using for this demonstration is absolutely last, just before the amp :) So, he's controlling a low-Z signal with the pedal. Of course it's different.
  24. AdmiralB

    So, the Dumble thing...

That would work great (and I do the same sometimes), because you're not loading the input of the amp the way you would with a volume pedal and a 'real' tube amp.

    So, the Dumble thing...

  26. AdmiralB

    So, the Dumble thing...

If it's post-buffer of some sort, then I'd agree - that's one thing active electronics (EMG, et al) gets you, treble retention and fidelity as you roll down volume. But in a totally passive setup, it's simply another volume pot in series with the guitar.
  27. AdmiralB

    So, the Dumble thing...

Unless you're using it after some buffered device (a buffered effects device, for example), a volume pedal is just a volume pot external to the guitar. The same loading, series resistance, et al would apply to one as would apply to the control in the guitar.

You can definitely cop the vibe of it. Depending upon your use case, that might be more than good enough. I was in a band in the late '90s with a female singer, we did a couple Heart songs and this was one. I was using a Digitech 2101 and got close enough for the moment.

    What's This PU?

I'd guess the set screws increase inductance a little bit, since there's more metal mass. But I can't tell. Some people claim they can hear the difference between socket heads and slot heads. I'd like to administer a double blind to them.
  54. AdmiralB

    What's This PU?

Gravity Storm is cap screws. Crunch lab is set screw on the 'discrete' side.
  55. AdmiralB

    What's This PU?

I always thought they were the same size wrenches, but maybe not. Sometimes the potting wax makes them a tight fit. The Super-style set screws are #10 (fine pitch, don't recall what the count is), and the cap screws are #5-40, if that helps.
  56. AdmiralB

    What's This PU?

Yep, the Supers (original, 2, and 3) use set screws. As do a few others. But most all newer models use cap screws; you can swap in the old-style fillister-head if you wish. You can tell that these are cap screws by the thickness of the rim around the 'hex' - set screws taper.
  57. AdmiralB

    What's This PU?

Well, I'm afraid you're still mistaken.. Very few DiMarzios use set screws. The Super family, the D-Activators...maybe a few others. The rest (with hex-head poles) use socket head cap screws. They're going into regular bobbins which have countersunk bores, so the 'cap' on the screw is...

    What's This PU?

The DCR will read a little lower in-circuit than it would isolated, but it's close enough - for example, a 16.0K pickup with a 500K volume pot would read around 15.5K (tone circuits don't affect DCR). Another thing you could do, if adventurous, would be to measure the DCR of each coil (using...
  59. AdmiralB

    What's This PU?

Looks like DiMarzio because of the two inspection holes per bobbin (just about everyone else has three) and the pointy mounting tabs. My guess is a Breed bridge, due to the polepiece type/color and the fact that the baseplate appears to be black.

Quick question: new to Solid State

The duty cycle concept is the main reason your rig didn't seem as loud as your Hiwatts. Axe-Fx II "Quantum" Rev 7.00 Public Beta

It's right inasmuch as what most people attribute to 'power tube distortion' is actually the PI clipping, and the fact that power tubes really don't leave much sonic fingerprint. Rotating through the various options on the Axe is an illustration of that. The rest of it, though...not so much.

Fractal Audio DRIVE models: Using an AMP block as a DRIVE

Why would you not turn presence to 0 - or remove NFB completely? No power amp means no phase inverter, which is where 99% of designs inject the NFB. Presence is a selective removal of NFB on high frequencies, so no power amp should mean no presence (or resonance/depth).
