METALLICA Chooses Fractal Audio Axe-Fx IIs for Silent Antarctica Concert

good lord, thread took off in a bad way :/ i'm not a follower of the group, but the only possible negative of this would be if tons of bands copy them and flood the place with "cool gigs"; would be an environmental impact there. happy christmas, you miserable lot :

METALLICA Chooses Fractal Audio Axe-Fx IIs for Silent Antarctica Concert

think i'll reserve judgement on the tone; youtube isn't renowned for hifi sound across the board. don't know much about metallica these days, but i guess it's more to do with getting to play on every continent. and why the hell not. impressed that they managed it, no other group ever did before.

cool vibe with the videos. technically antarctica, but as far north as possible. still a really iconic gig that.

Tell me your tales of Teles

the three iconic electrics: tele, strat, les paul. as for brands, totally subjective. one man's poison ... as the saying goes. try lots. of course can't really go wrong with a good fender. good 80s tokai for me, lsl is another one.

    I despise UPS

i'll agree with it depends on the branch. found ups to be one of the better ones around here. some other couriers have been tripe though; one left an expensive item at some random property and put a note through my door saying where they left it. wtf... never gave permission for that

METALLICA Chooses Fractal Audio Axe-Fx IIs for Silent Antarctica Concert

the comment r.e. "freezing up" pun: even though it's a joke, sounds like it actually might be a concern for someone. surely no amps on the planet have been designed and tested to run at temperatures that could potentially drop to -80C.

New unofficial Ernie musician JP majesty guitar

looked at the music man forum, looks like there's a lot of positive comments about the guitar. not that it matters. i think it is visually much better than the current model, but each to their own.

    Your favorite musicgear buying websites?

yes. they demanded photo ID + utility bill out of the blue. flabbergasted, as i have 100% positive feedback on ebay and never claimed anything from paypal. used it for 10 years without trouble until a year ago.
  12. H

    Your favorite musicgear buying websites?

was ebay 2002-2012, until paypal demanded photo id. told them "no", and that's the end of ebay. looking for another interney shop now too - hate going to music shops, and none around here anyway.

AXE 2 vs Kemper good balanced review

same thing, post reviews etc. if they influence a buying decision - without testing - that could be a mistake, that's all was meant. edit: usually find that the reviews that are comparing "1" vs "2" to be the least helpful. usually a hidden agenda with those. the last sentence made me very...

AXE 2 vs Kemper good balanced review

What makes a guitar really expensive.

i wouldn't claim that all players who use expensive guitars are posers. that sounds a bit egotistic, and isn't right imo. subjective is the word. some might not get on with the suhr guitars for instance, for whatever reason. definitely true that a great player will sound good playing anything...

Call to arms: Where are all the Ultra/Std users?

axe 1 for over 5.5 years, still sounds good & zero "gas" to upgrade to the 2. true. strange that, plenty of af1 users still around.

What makes a guitar really expensive.

    yawn *facepalm* ^ /end.
  20. H

What makes a guitar really expensive.

my old kramer has got some serious sweat sunk into the fretboard. most would say it needs a good clean, but it's priceless to me as it is ) i don't see classical music as some superior form of music. yes they practice very hard, but they just play cover songs at the end of the day :D
  21. H

What makes a guitar really expensive.

some hand made, with proprietary tremolo system etc. are worth the big asking price to some players - maybe in part due to the elite craftsmanship that goes into it. also, an original '59 les paul is worth every penny of 250k as an investment; would buy one tomorrow if i had the coin. imo -...

    Bass + Guitar = Baitar!

the low string on a 25.5 would be not good imo. you can hear it farting vociferously in parts of the demo, and intonation would likely be a problem. might be better if it was about 27" scale, imo.

    Why Do People "Resist" Modelers?

as much as i like axe-fx, valve amp will probably never be obsolete - and i hope they never do. pros such as guthrie govan still use valve amps some of the time, and i'd be surprised if he ever does go fully digital. also for the typical guitarist, when specialist digital gear breaks down...

STEINBERGER GM-1 ^not mine, but very tempted to throw coin at this. wish they'd make these things again, awesome. £2800 (4500 usd) is a bit salty though.
  30. H

    Why Do People "Resist" Modelers?

i don't worry about it to be honest. i like valve amps and digital unit too, for different things. modeller is unbeatable when lots of different sounds are used & for easy recording of good sound (imo); valve amp is unbeatable when i only want one particular sound for playing live (imho).
  31. H

any thoughts on when the Axe-FX III might be released?

as the axe2 has 2no. tigersharc processors, and those are still the best available for the application, an upgrade on the current model might be dependent on future dsp development.

    Whose heard of Polyphia.

saw this group on another thread; kids have been shredding hard instead of playing on call to duty. whatever age they are -- nice solos towards the end especially; some good chops and quite creative. there was a guthrie govan lick in there too for good measure :)

Electronic Cigarettes. Are they bad for you?

don't know what the problem is - no one is stopping anyone puffing away to their hearts content. is it a huge problem to go outside of buildings you don't own for a puff; smokers have been doing that for years around here with no issues (for using tobacco and the fake ones too)
  41. H

Which gauge strings should I use for B standard?

it's down to personal preference, but as you found those too heavy, maybe try: Ernie ball "Not even slinky" : 12,16,24p,32,44,56 < these have a plain "G" string. i find these alright for c-standard (usually play e-standard with 10-46) or perhaps "beefy slinky" 11,15,22p,30,42,54 may also be...

    Hang guitars on wall?

for 25.5" scale, EADGBE: - .08 - 0.038 = 71 lbs tension .09 - 0.042 = 85 lbs .012 - 0.054 = 148 lbs a strat can be fitted with .012 set no problem at all. big variance in tension just by changing string gauge; shows how insignificant the 7 lbs self weight really is.
  46. H

    Hang guitars on wall?

yeah, was going to mention about where the hanger contacts the neck. some cheap hangers have quite hard material on the hook - that's not good. cushioning material covering the hook is for sure a good idea.

    Hang guitars on wall?

there is absolutely no problem with hanging guitars vertically long term; the headstock is designed to take far more tension from the strings tuned to concert pitch. to exert ~7 lbs of axial load to the neck by hanging it vertically -- that's negligible, unless it's already cracked somewhere...

  57. H

Any Axe Fx III news on the horizon ? (check before I buy a II ;))

hanging on for 3 here, even if it takes a while. still quite like my the axe1. not expecting 3 to be vastly better than 2 though; a bit like intel processors these days - i'd expect the next one to be an incremental improvement over the current. can only speculate.
