John Nathan Cordy: Can Digital Modeling REALLY Get Much Better? - A look back over 25 years of modeling

When people ask me about modellers, I'm always tempted to say: "If you can't make good music with a POD, the problem isn't the POD". I'll probably accidentally say it out loud one day :)

John Nathan Cordy: Can Digital Modeling REALLY Get Much Better? - A look back over 25 years of modeling

I think the GP-8 and later digital version GP-16 were just effect processiors, no modelling. I had both and preferred the GP-8, although I did a small mod to the delay effect.

John Nathan Cordy: Can Digital Modeling REALLY Get Much Better? - A look back over 25 years of modeling

Beautiful intro piece! A common misconception that the pod was the first modeller. Roland already had a device (called the VG8 I think) that modelled guitars as well as the usual amps, cabs and mics. I used a later version, the GP 100 that didn’t have guitar modelling but had the amps and cabs...

How to control guitar pickup selection on AXE FX 3

An interesting idea, but note that you won't get the same sound in the middle position. Wired normally with guitar volumes on max, the two pickups are physically connected together in parallel resulting in a higher resonant frequency (lower inductance with the same cable capacitance). This is...

Dyna-cab, general consensus is that they're "better" than legacy?

Funny thing is that if modellers were first released with Dyna Cabs and everyone became familair with them, then someone came along with a new idea of IRs, can you imagine the reaction to needing to take a crapshot scroll through thousands of IR files in search of holy grail tone?

Trying to gig Casino, too much noise!! Is there a solution??

Assuming the wiring is ok in your casino, I’m assuming it has P90 or similar single coil pickups. The solution is to use hum bucking, or hum canceling pickups. There are some good choices available today. I recently used some excellent Lindy Fralin P90 size pickups to solve this same problem.

    Les paul neck Humbucker woofy

To Dave M: I just used a capacitor, probably around 2.2nF between the neck tone and neck volume (pickup goes direct to tone control). The special pickup selector switch shorts the cap when using both pickup so there’s no change to that sound.

Now everyone has Cygnus, do you think you should still reduce cab block hi's from 20,000 to 6,000-8,500

IMHO the CAB lo and hi cuts are there to compensate for close-mic'd IRs. Just the same as a FOH sound engineer will typically cut lows and highs on a real mic placed close to a real guitar speaker, to make it sound like what you hear off-axis at a distance.

    Wrong pickup spacing

A common misunderstanding here. Pole pieces are not a "microphone" for the string. The purpose of pole pieces is to magnetise the string. The magnetised string moves above the coils to induce a voltage which amplified to produce sound. Of course the coils extend well outside the pole pieces...
