Dreaded AXE-FX NAME TIMEOUT

I'd suspect you need a tech to determine if the issue is at the AFX2 side or the MFC side. In my case I just punted and moved to everything over MIDI. I found the power over MIDI is not that reliable beyond a 20' MIDI cable, so... I'm using a power plug at the MFC with a 30' MIDI cable.

Yeah that was because of me talking with BTPA. LOL. We ended up going with 30' based on your recommendation. Also buying a whip to a D-Panel connector for my patch panel in my roadcase with the AFX2

BTPA got back to me today and the longest they advise for reliable phantom power is 30 feet after discussing with Fractal tech support. So I am ordering that and will reply with my experience once received.

Since I cannot figure out whether its the RJ45 port on the AFX2 or the MFC-101 I've fallen back to using a 5-pin MIDI cable and the MFC-101 power wart with MFC-101 Use Port set to MIDI. Works fine - tempo, tune, patch changes, Reveal mode, all as expected. I'm going to order a 7-pin MIDI cable...

Yes MFC 101 AXE-FX Mode is set to "II" matching that I have an AXE-FX II. Also MFC-101 Use Port was set to EXPANSION. MFC-101 powers up no data exchange, and I get the NAME TIMEOUT error on the MFC-101 screen.

Max Midi Cable Length?

Since you bought 7-pin am I correct you are also running the Phantom Power to the MFC ? I'm considering a similar length 7-pin MIDI cable from best-tronics and wanted to check before ordering.

Good ideas unix-guy. I contacted BTPA and am waiting for a price quite on a 40' 7-pin MIDI cable and a D-Panel connector with pigtail to go back to my AXE-FX. D-Panel connector is for a 1U patch panel at the bottom of my rack so I'm not constantly plugging and unplugging back of AXE-FX...

I'm still overwhelmed and happy with ARES 2.0 on my AFXII. I would load a new firmware, but getting ARES was such a huge event I doubt we will see more firmware on our legacy devices. I'll keep rocking this bad boy and see what comes with AFX 4 or AFX 5. :p:cool:

One MFC IA Turn on/off two blocks simultaneously, but...

Just to followup... setting GEQ4 as previously mentioned to toggle two blocks worked so well... I just setup GEQ3 to toggle CHORUS1 and QUADCHORUS1 on and off as well. This gives me the option to use either flavor in a patch toggled with the same MFC-101 button. :cool::p:cool:

Thanks for the idea Bakerman... works a charm! I used GEQ4 as my LED on/off block and set the IO>CTRL CC values for the ROTARY1 and PITCH2 to the same value as GEQ4.

Just offhand it does sound like the volume level from your computer is overloading the Pyle mixer input. Try turning the tracks down to zero, set the fader volume on your Pyle to 0, then slowly bring up the track volume on the computer. When you get to the point the track is distorting...

How do I set up an external Tap Tempo to an MFC 101??? Help!

Why Hiwatts cannot easily do the Gilmour thing? ("Shine On" preset included)

Ahhhhh..... yep makes sense now comparing to other references stating he put a CE-2 on the left channel (example here http://www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=2117). His tones really are about the subtle modulation bits aren't they. I'm still on AXE-FX II for now... figure I'll see if an AXE-FX 4...

Freakballs... I downloaded this today and gave it a whirl earlier. Used my PRS Brushstroke 24 with bridge humbucker only. Got me straight into Gilmour-land so deep I ended up late to work playing SOYCD for a while :D:eek:o_O. Cleans up and dirties up very nicely in response to my guitar...

How are you dealing with the added gain in Ares?

Using the Triaxis model preamps I feel the same. Definitely more gain on all the preamp types that I will have to dial back.

Thanks for the information and thoughts Simeon. Will be checking it out today. I'm using a PRS Brushstroke 24 that has their "408 narrowfield" pickups in it which seem to be mid-gain as well so I suspect copping your settings will be an interesting exercise.

News to me but I put in a join request today, thanks for mentioning it. My church patch is based on the Dirty Shirley right now, low gain at the breakup point, but with Esoteric ACB and Tube Driver blocks in front - usual chorus, multiple delays, and reverb after.

Dialing in settings at home doesn't translate...

Truth. It can help to add a PEQ block at the end of the chain maybe before reverb to account for easily tweaked differences at gig volume and home volume.

Great info guys! I intend to get in there with the cleaning tool tonight and a magnifying glass. Going to evaluate the internals best as I can with magnifier since they have clear frontshells. Also going to see if I have way blobbed down in the tube somewhere although they look pretty clean...

Sadly I think one of my custom-molded IEMs are failing after several years of use. Used them today at church with our Aviom system and had almost no sound in the right ear. I have a new cable on order and crossing my fingers this corrects the problem. But I'm considered 'non-custom molds'...

This is probably the best tip for anyone using a digital modeler or MFX. I use GT-100 now (but am upgrading to a FAS soon) and performed a similar level check myself. This helps you have a much more consistent output level as you switch FX in and out!

You can run a standard VST host program like "VSTHost" from Herman Seib if you don't have a DAW. Will need to configure VST host point to the right audio devices and also load the VST loudness meter. Not difficult to do.
